One in four men surveyed for a United Nations study in Asia and the Pacific admitted raping at least one woman.
The UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific surveyed over 10,000 men at nine sites in six countries: Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka. At the survey site in China, 23 percent of men admitted to at least one rape. In Papua New Guinea, that figure was 61 percent.
To understand what's behind such startling figures, National Geographic spoke with Rachel Jewkes, the lead technical adviser for the study.
You've studied rape extensively in South Africa and now across Asia and the Pacific. How did you get involved in this kind of research?
I moved out to South Africa from England in 1994. I had a job to set up the women's health research unit in the South African Medical Research Council. I was told that the key issues in women's health were things like teenage pregnancy, so I said, "Okay, I'm willing to do research on teenage pregnancy, but as part of this work I want to talk to teenagers about how they got pregnant." We interviewed 24 pregnant teenagers. Twenty-three out of the 24 told us stories about being raped. I had absolutely no idea that sexual violence was a phenomenon that could have this sort of prevalence.

Depends on what the meaning of is, is.
Gawd who would wanna rape that? (in her dreams)
OK maybe after a hundred thousand six pax
(Shut up Nicolae)
A thoroughly insightful analysis that goes deeper into the mendacious, rigged approach taken by The PC practitioners
to make a point to their brain-addled PC sycophants
Much obliged.
Something else weird is going on, here:
Sweden is almost RED —TONS of “rapes”, right?
Well, sure, lots of Muslim immigrants raping up a storm, sure, but there’s also something else.
A battered Muslim woman turns up at the police station, crying.
“Did you want to have sex with your nasty, much older hubby?”
“No..”
“Did you tell him no..?”
“Yes...”
“And in spite of that, he still had sex with you..?”
“Yes”
“OK, that’s a rape. How many times did he do that to you, over the month you were married and before you showed up here at the station..?”
“Ten times, I think...?”
“OK, that’s TEN RAPES...” AND THEY WRITE DOWN THAT NUMBER.
ONE crying Tunisian immigrant wife, and TEN RAPES.
You see, the PC Handbook for Rapes in Muslim marriages have a totally different take in the manner in which they are perceived, recorded in criminal records. By its very nature
RAPE within Muslim countries are no considered RAPE as far as criminality is concerned. In Islam a women must submit to sex
whenever the husband’s needs arise. There is no technical condition as that of rape because no women has any right to refuse sex to their husband.
In many of the places listed there, “data not available” probably translate to “you really DON”T wanna know”.
As for this story, it would not surprise me even a little to find that it is true for Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea for reasons mentioned above, Sri Lanka because of all the political violence, which is very often followed by higher rates of sexual assaults, and Indonesia and Bangladesh for reasons which should be self explanatory.
Where in your continuum from “Honey its my birthday” to “throw her on the floor would you rate the following behavior.
Comes home drunk frequently at 3 am., Keeps begging/demanding sex until granted, takes forever to finish because of drunkenness and then complains because wife cannot hold down a normal job.
Like Kinsey, she could have done her “survey” in prisons.
So, in my understanding of marriage, I would put this (I hope purely hypothetical case) Much closer to "throw her on the floor and..."
But my original point stands. The research being done here is so sloppy there is no attempt to differentiate what should be grounds for divorce from criminal sexual assault. And I believe that confusion is deliberate.
Does the definition of rape include any nonpenetration activity but coerced? Does it include husband strongly asked his wife to have sex when she' s tired and at first say no?
Comes home drunk frequently at 3 am., Keeps begging/demanding sex until granted, takes forever to finish because of drunkenness and then complains because wife cannot hold down a normal job.
Acting like an a*hole should not be equated with being a rapist. Sorry, but the behavior you describe is no where on the continuum. In fact, even asserting that such a continuum exists is fallacious. In the example you cite, the female "victim" is more a victim of her own spinelessness. Her marriage is a shambles, and if she had any integrity, she would take proper steps.
Regards,
Does that include goats and blow up dolls?
You will need to consult with Doctor whoopie goldberg!
“Asian men”. . .and in oriental? If so, VERY hard to believe.
If by “Asian men” she means the Brit definition, meaning muslime, then not hard to believe at all.
In most cultures that is something most men would not report or admit.
I believe the Asian men who went about admitting their crimes were doing so in braggart fashion, as show off of their male machismo derring-do, as being that of sexy, showing off of a trait, style they believe women find attractive, the thought of being whisked away by some knight in shining armor to be ravished over and over and over again is a recurring fantasy theme among some woman.
Hory Makaler!
