I think you give him way too much credit. His perceived intelligence and cunning is crafted and handed to him by his handlers. He is just a puppet serving objective driven power-brokers as their useful idiot. He is doing a great job at that, I must admit.

The guy who has such a political tin ear that he goes to a fund raiser in Las Vegas when one of our embassies is under attack, and American citizens are being murdered? The guy who has to be dragged from the golf course when important events are underway? This guy is clearly a tool, willing in spirit but weak in flesh.
