I didnt attend Fashion Week in New York this season. And by all accounts, I certainly made the right decision. A disturbing trend that began on the runway a few years back is continuinga trend of exclusion that is glaringly insulting and simply unacceptable to me.
Ill never forget Fashion Week in 2010, when a major designer (whom I wont name) invited me to his fall fashion collection. He messengered over a personal design for me to wear to the show, along with a note complimenting me for all my pioneering work in the industry.
In 1974, I became the first African-American model to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. I continued to break down racial barriers by becoming the first black model to appear on an international cover of Elle magazine. More major fashion publications followed.
Appreciative of his comments and consideration, I accepted the designers invite and proudly took my front-row seat among other celebrities and fashion-industry notables. I sat there as endless numbers of gorgeous garments sashayed down the runway, draped over endless numbers of gorgeous bodies. I loved the detail and the glamour of it all, but as the show neared its end, I realized one unsettling omission: not one black model had strolled down the catwalk. By the time every girl came back onstagemarking the close of the showmy mouth was completely agape. Had this fashion designer actually complimented me on my role in changing the color of fashion and then invited me to a show with absolutely no black models in it at all? He most certainly had, and he clearly saw no problem with it. As reporters approached me after the show to ask my view of the designs, I waved them away, as Id forgotten every outfit that crossed my sight that afternoon. Now all I could see was red. And it wasnt a stunning red dress.
“Ironic considering the fashion industry is full of lefties.”
It’s only ironic if you take their fatuous rhetoric at face value. Despite the altruistic talk they reduce persons to mere instances of categories.
Historically,i.e., in reality, leftist regimes have always treated their populations as state human resources to be managed or liquidated.
“White fashion models are for the most part singularly unattractive. Actually, that is true for fashion models in general, regardless of hue.”
I would agree that fashion models are often unbearably emaciated. However, some of them could eat a sandwich or two and fill out nicely.
As for the unattractiveness of negro women, de gustibus non disputandum est. However, there are several things that lead me to think that my opinion is widely shared. For one, compare the number of interracial couples in which the male is black with those in which the female is black.
New this fall, Wookie wool fashions...
“Dont forget PC is not just for the left but also the right/”
Any PC found on the right is an aberration.
I have known several of each. I am speaking of the married ones, the ones who are permanent and satisfied couples. I met a number in my years working the state fairs in the midwest and south. The interracial couples of both types appeared to be the most “married” couples I met.
Good God!! (Little Mo she ain’t!!) How in the heck does she haul that fat can around the tennis court as well as she does? Don’t her inner thighs rub themselves raw from all of that running? According to a few of the announcers at the recent US Open Tournament, she could very well be rated the best off all time in Women’s Tennis by the time her career is over so she has to be doing something right, even with lotsa junk in that humongous trunk.
They're playing attractive homeowners in beautiful houses calling the alarm company because the evil honky is crawling through their window.
That’s harsh. You are entitled to your opinion. But some opinions are better kept to oneself.
Top 10 Black Models at Fashion Week
“that is REAL stereotyping”
So? When something is true 99% of the time, the only way to avoid “stereotyping” is to lie.
“there are many many very attractive black women”
No, the vast majority of negro women are crushingly unattractive.
“I am a typical discriminating person”
Does that mean anything except you share opinions with the people in your life?
“and I have issues with black culture, but I would never ever say what you said”
This isn’t a cultural issue. It’s just a matter of appearance. Say it or choke it back, it’s true just the same.
“I know differently.”
I don’t think so, and I think over the next few months you are going to get very uncomfortable as you start to notice how few negro women are attractive.
“big problem in American culture is that all you guys think”
Resent men much?
“you deserve a 5’11 skinny pale skin woman with naturally blonde hair”
My wife of 27 years is Japanese. Not pale, not blonde. I’m quite happy with my marriage.
“and even though such a woman is very thin, walaaaaa”
That’s “voila.”
“she has great big bazoomers.”
Never liked the huge ones myself.
“well, such a woman exists only in barbie dolls”
Sorry, but that’s not true, either.
“I have known several of each.”
Still, there are hundreds of black male/white woman couples for every white male/black woman couple. Thousands, perhaps.
“The interracial couples of both types appeared to be the most married couples I met.”
I’m not entirely sure what you mean by that, but I would think that social pressures would probably either drive a couple closer together or drive them apart.
“But some opinions are better kept to oneself.”
And that is one of the worst problems we have in America today. We do not have freedom of speech.
Well, I’m taking it back. I am reclaiming and exercising that right.
Plus size model although she is bigger than a plus size.
Yes but even left wing fashion leaders want to be sucessful and earn lots of money and the adoration of the little people. So they will choose models that will help them obtain those goals (with a token or two)
As an aside I won’t be hired as a model. Too old, too fat, too slow.
Why? Because they are completely ignorant of the fact that their parading around of their fat out of shape slob bodies is disgusting to the rest of us. Give me Lena Horne or Di Carroll any day off the week. Both 100% professional and beautiful.
And every other commerical I see as of late or working on American idol as a judge.
I didn’t say you aren’t free to express your opinion. only that you couldve self screened that one. Nobody need say every thought they have. Surely you can see the difference between that and having no freedom of speech. come on....
Iman aka mrs. David Bowie comes to mind. She was and still the best model ever in my opinion.
Linda Evangelista is gorgeous and Paulina 2 of my favorite models along with Lauren Hutton and they are still beautiful although older.
