Miss Kansas is not in Kansas anymore. And the Miss America pageant has never seen anyone like her.
First off, Miss Kansas Theresa Vail is a sergeant in the U.S. Army, only the second contestant ever to be on active duty.
...
Sgt. Vail is also an M16 marksman, a bow hunter, and a mechanic. Only recently did she add beauty queen to her resume, when she entered her first pageant just nine months ago on the advice of her commanding officer. When she was told she wouldnt be able to use archery as her talent, she had to pick another one and quick.
She chose to sing opera.
"I'd never sung opera in my life," Vail says. Forty-eight hours later she had mastered a Pavarotti piece she found on Youtube, and won the Miss Kansas talent competition.

I'm in love!
What is it with American women and their tattoos?
I think they are disgusting and ugly. OK, I am an old goat
and not hip, but really.
As I watch the History channel, I am grossed out by all the program’s girls lathered with tattoos.
Think how they will look in their senior years.
That’s not even an artistic tattoo.
Looks like graffiti on a bathroom wall.
Cute girl, though.
I abhor the primitive craziness of marking one’s own body with tattoos.
What are those? Washing instructions?
“Cute girl, though.”

Yes, she is cute, and maybe it is just my old age that makes them seem disgusting. Some taste change as we age, and the times change. I just wonder how they will look when the girl is a senior.
I wouldn’t exactly call that “body art.”
I’m an American woman and I think they are ugly and disgusting whether they are on a woman or a man. I’ll be glad when the weather gets cold and people have to put some clothes back on so they won’t be visible. I see people that could be in a freak show because they are so covered with tattoos. I don’t get it. It looks trashy. I can guarantee that one day when their skin gets loose and saggy they will regret it.
“I just wonder how they will look when the girl is a senior.”
No one will be able to read the print :)
Worth repeating. Fully agree.
New England Journal of Medicine article looks at the public health issues resulting from nontuberculous Mycobacteria, a bacterial infection caused by contaminated tattoo ink — ink that was contaminated. It can cause lung disease, joint infection, eye problems and other organ infections.
Even with modern tattoo removal technology, their skin will never look the same — scar tissue takes the place of the “removed” ink.
Not too long age we were talking about tatoos on FR.
What I resent is having to avert my eyes, say in a grocery store check out line, because I don’t know what the heck I’m about to see - some stuff is X-rated, and I don’t care to give the wearer the satisfaction of oogling his/her tats.
That goes double when I have a grandkid with me and we get to see some stupid stuff painted all over some one’s body.
Blah!
I don’t think we’re to treat our bodies this way, either. . .
The tattoo is the serenity prayer.
They will all look like weird Dali paintings....
She is a babe! Beautiful inside and out.
I can overlook tats if the tats are on a person like her.

HaHa, that is an interesting take...probably correct.
I applaud her accomplishments, I would applaud anyone who did it.
But MISS America is supposed to be about the ideals of womanhood, not the ideals of machismo.
And besides, Ted Nugent is easier on the eyes...
;-)
I’ll give her an A for effort, but there is zero chance she’s the best looking gal in the whole state.
