Are you nuts, Mr. Putin? The United States is exceptional
foxnews.com ^ | September 12, 2013 | Julie Roginsky

President Putin, the United States is exceptional among the world’s nations.

This is not the usual jingoism you may hear from the citizen of any nation – the type of jingoism, incidentally, in which Russia excels.

Instead, Mr. President, take it from someone whose family fled your country over 30 years ago because of religious and ethnic persecution.

My parents and I arrived in the United States with $90 in our pockets, speaking not a word of English and stripped of any nation’s citizenship. And yet we came here because the United States is exceptional in the opportunities it has provided to generations of those who arrived at its ports with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the drive to succeed as Americans.

We came here because life in the Soviet Union, which you served so faithfully as a KGB colonel, was incompatible with basic human dignity.

We came here because generations of our family had been killed, abused and disenfranchised simply because of our religious identity.

To us, what was exceptional was that a world power would provide a new life for us without asking about our ethnicity, whether we were members of the right political party or whether we associated with those who spoke out against the government.

That the United States asked us none of these things is what makes it exceptional – and what made the former Soviet Union, which you served so proudly, unexceptional in its generations-long oppressive nature.

There is not, coincidentally, a mass movement of any oppressed ethnic or religious minority to flee the United States, to Russia or anywhere else.

We were exceptional, and then the demographics changed.

You know now what America stands for in the eyes of the world?

Gangsta Rap, Trash like Miley Cyrus and the Katrashians, Gays, and our entire junk culture. That’s how the world sees the US now.

And Russia is at least trying to keep some of it out. Say what you will about Putin, but on this, the Russians are right.

Wait a minute. Isn’t Ms Roginsky one of Fox’s liberal commentators? How can she defend Democrats who are eager to disenfranchise Catholics? How can she honestly say that the Democrats’ platform will strengthen this country in any way? Something is awry here.

Perhaps I am mistaken about this young woman. Maybe she is not the person I remember seeing on Fox panels.

I would offer on the statement by President Putin that there is a litmus test here.

How many people risk drowning, suffocating, dying of dehydration, packed like sardines in vehicles to get into Russia?

I know of one country close to mine (Canada) where they do just that.

People could save us a lot of trouble if they researched just what "American exceptionalism" means, that is, what the historical origins and context of the phrase are.

It doesn't mean what everyone seems to think it does. It's been more of an isolationist idea than an interventionist one -- historically anyway.

small error -- Putin was a Lt. Colonel who resigned on the second day of the 1991 attempted coup against Gorbachev

Julie Roginsky is right about the other things, though as a child of refuseniks, why is she a Democrat?

I cheer on Assad only in the case of Syria. Assad is evil, but he's the least bad solution for Syria. And, for Christians in Syria he is the best solution bar the creation of a Christian Syria

Putin is right on Syria to oppose the destruction of Christians in Syria.

On other matter they may be wrong, but narrowly and only on this matter (Syria), Assad and Putin are correct.

Gulf War One was a mistake. It was idealistic to free an absolute monarchy from a dictatorship

The Saudis played us and we fell for it.

What was the result? We had boots on the ground in Saudi Arabia and that was viewed as haram (evil) / declaration of war on Islam by Bin Laden. Thanks to our knocking off Saddam, the Christian population in Iraq, which dates back to the Apostles, reduced from 2 million to 400,000 and dropping. Thanks to our knocking off Saddam, there is now a pro-Iran government

What would have happened if Gulf war one never happend?

Saddam was brutal but he was secular and he despised Sunni jihadis just as much as he despised Persians (he compared Persians to flies)

He wanted Kuwait to get more money to fight Iran

If Saddam kept Kuwait, he would get more money and also leverage against Saudi Arabia and Qatar to give him more money.

That money would have been used to fight another war against Iran and kill more Shia fanatics (he killed quite a lot during the Iran-Iraq war)

Al Qaeda would have focussed on him, just as they did against Ghaddafi and against Saddam later, because alq hates the secular dictators that stand in their way of re-igniting the ummah

Saddam smashing into Iran while crushing Alqaeda and stopping Saudi money from being used to finance terrorists attacking the west sounds like a very good thing -- in fact that would have led to the Ayatollah's being weakened and kicked out of power

Today would have been safer -- and 9/11 would not have happened in the USA (perhaps an attack against Iraq)

On the other hand, Afghanistan was a right war, a correct one that served our interests. The next war after that if we wanted to be serious should have been against Pakistan to grab their nukes and prevent them selling nukes to N Korea, etc. etc.

TJ: All Obama wants to do is whatever Putin tells him to do, just like you.

1. you don't know nything about William to make that statement

2. going by Obama's bowing down to the Saudis and supplying money to jihadis in Syria, Obama does NOT want to do what Putin tells him, rather Obama wants to follow the Saudis...

and people thought he was smart....

What error are you referring to exactly? Are you trying to say that Putin did not faithfully serve the Soviet Union because he chose to remain loyal to Gorbachev and sided against the coup plotters?

Putin has not strength beyond bluster and the support (waning) of the Russian people -- his military is hollow and couldn't stand up to Central European armies, leave alone the USA's

And his support from the Russian people is because he is seen to protect the Christians in Syria

I too do not trust Putin, but on the matter of Syria he is correct -- Assad is best for Christians there.

Obama is not doing what the Saudis want him to do, he is doing what Putin wants him to do. The Saudis want Obama to overthrow Assad, but Obama is against regime change.

The most “exceptional” thing about America in 2013 is our support of unrestricted abortion and, increasingly, homosexual marriage and homosexual adoption.

Yes. As caww said, we are rapidly moving away from God's grace

The Obama regime specifically punishes countries that do not accept homosexuality as normal and who do not allow free killing of babies

TJ -- we are rapidly moving away from being an exceptional country and being a decrepit one. And this is not "Obama" doing it -- he was elected by nearly half the electorate.

..we’ve all been watching Putin take Obama to task and that’s been worth the show...both men are bad..

The difference is that Putin is playing FOR Russia, while Obama is playing AGAINST the USA....

Putin wasn’t speaking to Americans. He was speaking to leftists. Two different things, regardless of place of birth. The leftists agree completely with Putin, and all his ilk, on the subject.

I'm sorry, but the leftists are Obama and the Democrat co

Putin's statement of not getting rid of a SECULAR dictator in favor of jihadi alqaeda sunni "rebels" is sound...

On the matter of America being better than Russia, there is no doubt of that. At this point in time, the USA trumps over Russia. under the Obama regime, that lead is deteriorating. If we get another Obama-lite in 2016, that lead will disapear by 2020...

I know I am a glass half full kind of guy but I suppose I need to recognize that it is only half full when it used to be almost full. Even still I don’t place my hope in men but God. So who knows what might happen - though I am sober enough to know that when God chastises a nation the righteous seem to suffer along with the ungodly and maybe even more so.

The secular vs jihadiscum argument is bull.

Syria, under its current ruler, was every bit as much a help to the jihadiscum we’ve been fighting as any theocratic mohmad regime could be.

Syria has also maintained the old cold war connections to North Korea in the areas of chem/nuke work as well as Nork special purpose force cadres for use in training jihadiscum orgs wanting such.

Now, the part that everyone wants to completely overlook...

One of the primary reasons we’ve not been allowed to actually deal with the jihadiscum is this whole “well, they’re not nation/state operators!!! who do we attack??!!” bullcrap that the weak and stupid like to hide behind. By weak and stupid, I expressly mean leftists and all who get in their knees to suck down and swallow whatever gets pumped out of their propaganda spigot like good little useful idiots.

Let Syria step out from under that cover and become full blown, up front, full on, jihadiscum owned and operated. Let every piece of crap degenerate arab/motard nation do so.

That clears at least one of the many grotesquely moronic bits of nonthought leftardism that’s been handcuffing us so tightly.
