Watched Cops Are Polite Cops
Reason ^ | August 30, 2013 | Ronald Bailey

Who will watch the watchers? What if all watchers were required to wear a video camera that would record their every interaction with citizens? In her ruling in a recent civil suit challenging the New York City police department’s notorious stop-and-frisk rousting of residents, Judge Shira A. Scheindlin of the Federal District Court in Manhattan imposed an experiment in which the police in the city’s precincts with the highest reported rates of stop-and-frisk activity would be required to wear video cameras for one year.

This is a really good idea. Earlier this year, a 12-month study by Cambridge University researchers revealed that when the city of Rialto, California, required its cops to wear cameras, the number of complaints filed against officers fell by 88 percent and the use of force by officers dropped by almost 60 percent. Watched cops are polite cops.

Jay Stanley, a policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), calls police-worn video cameras “a win/win for both the public and the police.” Win/win because video recordings help shield officers from false accusations of abuse as well as protecting the public against police misconduct. The small cameras like the AXON Flex from Taser International attach to an officer’s sunglasses, hat, or uniform.

Officer-worn video cameras do have the potential to violate the privacy of citizens. After all, the police frequently are dealing with people when they are having one of the worst days of their lives. For instance, police often enter people’s houses to investigate incidents. In such cases, video of someone’s literal or metaphorical dirty laundry is nobody else’s business. Consequently, Stanley argues that strong rules regarding the retention, use, and disclosure of videos from police-worn cameras must be established and enforced.

Agreed,
cops hate it when citizens cam them in fact here in Maryland Nazi police got a judge to sign a warrant with signature blacked out to search and seize all his recording and computer equipment from a man's home just for camcording them in public pulling him over and posting it on youtube, no charges of course as no law against that would hold up

After the murder down the street two members of the local constabulary showed up on my doorstep as part of the information gathering process.

Both were wearing cameras center chest.

As soon as the conversation went from them asking me questions to me asking them questions, they both slid the lens covers up over their cameras!

Where does a judge get the right to legislate like this from the bench? How can a judge do this other than usurping the power of the people through their legislature?

I tell my kids this all the time...

A wise man once said “Character is who you are when no one is looking”

So if you live your life as if there is always a camera filming your every move, you are probably going to act civil and polite at all times... it is just a nice game to play with yourself that helps you to live a virtuous life.

Then you learn the meaning of “Virtue is it’s own reward”

Acting good just feels good.

Next, all elected officials should be required to wear them 24/7.

In really serious cases of illegal activity by police, I suspect that any recordings will be “lost” anyway.

If you’re photographing the cops - or a politico - always have overwatch. Have someone else recording you.

Hot flash, turducken:
Badge heavy, skin-headed, jack booted thugs have worn out their welcome, even among conservatives. We've realized that these bloused-booted, 'roided military wanna-bes will be the leading edge of any attempt by the Chicago Crook to steal our guns, money and property, "for the public safety."

WHEN any "pot shots" are taken, they will be aimed fire, doped for windage and elevation, by shooters who know how to squeeze off a round.

Consider that the next time a BS ticket is written, it is one more civilian who won't give a rat's a$$ if one of the Sheriff of Nottingham's Men gets home that night.

So go ahead and tuck your black cargo pants into the tops of your boots, pull on the black gloves and the gargoyle glasses, and ponder that 600 meters is still iron sight range...

With that in mind, NOW, turn off your camera...

From Drudge today, September 10, 2013:

Deputy charged with brutalizing -- entire family...

Video at http://www.khou.com/video/featured-videos/Caught-on-camera-Deputy-brutalizes-a-family-223074081.html

(Sorry, I don't know how to get a click-on link in the text. Have to copy and paste.)

By the way, the attack is pretty brutal. Especially by the big, fat deputy.

A buddy of mine has his own dashcam, got some pretty good video until he wrecked his truck.(lost control of a camper trailer in high winds)

The next big thing is auto-upload to the cloud, the only thing holding it back is Wireless phone caps, but it is possible with Sprint and T-Mobile right now.

You really should get out of the Cop Shop and talk to civilians.

The only ones here, any more, who still respect JBTs are other JBTs and some of the more retarded leftists.

How many thousands of "bikers" are going to flip off the police, tomorrow, in DC?

All the preppers, citizen militias, Freepers, Oath Keepers, Vets and Tea Party types are NOT on your side. They just smile, keep sighting in, buy more ammo, and wait.

Been to a gun show, lately? Time was, it was all shot guns and hunting rifles. Now it's tactical rifles with picatinny rails, laser sights, trauma kits, and level three body armor.

It's getting real crowded in this clock tower...

Who's the one who is out of touch?

Video cameras in classrooms would also be nice. Parents could either log in when they wanted or be sent a random video of their kids on a regular basis. This would also curtail the freakin’ nimrod teachers and some of the indoctrination would falter.

Hell, I’ve beat perps up before, but ALWAYS gave them the benefit of the doubt. “Get in the car, before this escalates.” WHO BE ON A ESCALATE?” “Just get in the damn car and we’ll discuss this.” “WHO BE DISGUSTIN”?” as he attacked me. I took him down sorta Judoish-like and kicked him in head. Got his attention. Set him loose at the booking counter and told the Sargent to “Go ahead, put him in the cell.” Guy got all pissed off screaming “Who you calling a GOURDHEAD>” Had to kick his ass (this time) again.

It justifies my belief in the Downing Effect.
