A chilly Arctic summer has left nearly a million more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year – an increase of 60 per cent.

The rebound from 2012’s record low comes six years after the BBC reported that global warming would leave the Arctic ice-free in summer by 2013.

Instead, days before the annual autumn re-freeze is due to begin, an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia’s northern shores.

Does anyone know the status of North Atlantic Deep Water? With little freezing of arctic water last year, the return of water from the north end of the Gulf Stream back to the Equator may have been affected. If this were a long term trend it could cause start of the next Ice Age. Thus serious climate change but not global warming.

Apparently people have taken these predictions seriously as there seem to be several expeditions to cross the "Northwest Passage" this summer. They don't seem to be doing terribly well either, I hope no one gets killed.

In theory warming should cause any arctic current to stop or slow down as there is no longer a temperature gradient. Thus the Arctic Ocean’s waters will no longer mix with the warmer water and a rapid increase in ice would occur.
