BERLIN (AP) He was Adolf Hitler's devoted bodyguard for most of World War II and the last remaining witness to the Nazi leader's final hours in his Berlin bunker. To the very end, SS Staff Sgt. Rochus Misch was proud of it all.
For years, he accompanied Hitler nearly everywhere he went, sticking by the man he affectionately called "boss" until the dictator and his wife, Eva Braun, killed themselves as defeat at the hands of the Allies drew nearer. The loyal SS officer remained in what he called the "coffin of concrete" for days after Hitler's death, finally escaping as Berlin crumbled around him and the Soviets swarmed the city.
Even in his later years, during a 2005 interview with The Associated Press in which he recounted Hitler's claustrophobic, chaotic final days, Misch still cut the image of an SS man, with a rigid posture, broad shoulders, neatly combed white hair and no apologies for his close relationship with the most reviled man of the 20th century.
"He was no brute. He was no monster. He was no superman," Misch said.

I’m surprised the Soviets let him live.
he hasnt killed 50 million people
His support for abortion has killed millions and the way he’s putting the United States at risk, we could lose many more than 50 million.
Obama is moving into the same league as Hitler and Stalin. If allowed to do so, he’ll become their equal.IMO
Obama is pure evil.
Our country is heading down the same road or at least a very similar one. :(
Would you be referring to the illegitimate, bisexual, Marxist Kenyan Muslim Usurper?
From the wit and wisdom of Adolf Hitler:
Der Fuehrer, with a twinkle in his eye joked, “This is the place where all the people went and thought they were going to have a nice shower, but were gassed instead! Ha!” Then he looked around and no one was laughing, so he continued, “I guess you had to be there.” The next day, he made sure that they all were.
I am amazed at how long it seems the nazi’s live. They sure do get up there. I am sure millions have died over the years younger and without the fan fair but the few long runners amaze me.
ok, I agree
Not YET. He's working on it. He may get Russia to nuke us or if he is successful at getting all the guns rounded up, then he'll top Hitler easy.
There are a great many older Germans who, although not outright defending Hitler, still do not believe he was a monster. I recall visiting Berchtesgaden and noticed the Nazi memorabilia on sale there. I saw framed photos of Hitler and various other mementoes. There was an active sale of these ongoing, but not by foreign visitors. They were German citizens.
In walking down an alleyway lined with specialty shops in Munchen, I noticed a small shop that specialized in the sale of photos and Nazi memorabilia.
There were several million innocents murdered by Nazi thugs specially selected to ‘serve’ in concentration camps. They were indeed responsible for herding innocent men, women and children into various chambers for the purpose of poisoning them with gas. I do believe the larger majority of Germans, even those serving in the military, were totally unaware of the carnage.
If we are anxious to condemn someone we should look towards Mao Zedong, Josef Stalin, Pol Pot and Idi Amin Dada. They each made Hitler’s regime look like pikers.
Americans should also remember that it was WWI and it’s aftermath whereby German was saddled with reparations that were totally unfair and were a direct cause of the rise of the Nazis.
Here’s a little number in remembrance of this fine example of Teutonic virtue.

Poor Cupcake. All he wanted to do his entire life was to serve mankind. Especially those in his adopted country.
Besides, Skeeter couldn’t help being a homosexual. He was born that way don’t you know?
This man is as evil and devious as any who ever lived on this planet.
Hopefully the Syria situation will wake up some of the fools.
(I have no idea why.)
Adolf Hitler was a Fuhrer, he was a good Fuhrer of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him drink weisswein
He always had some mighty fine weisswein, Sieg Heil
War mit der world, mit all the untermensch now
War mit der u-boats in der deep blue sea
War to you and me
And if I were the king of the Germans
I tell you what I would do
I’d throw out the Jews and the Russians in the world
And I’d make sweet weltanschauung, Sieg Heil
War to the world, mit all the untermensch now
War mit der u-boats in der deep blue sea
War to you and me.
A member of the SS who didn’t kill anyone? And you know this how?
If you forgot the sarc tag, my apologies.
Basically, the Reggie Love of his day. Nice.
Pre-WW2/Hitler Germany should always be a reminder how, as John Anthony West says, “There is nothing more powerful than an idea who’s time has come...not that it is a good idea.” How we deal with the Hope and Change president and/or his decisions will be remembered one way or the other just as Germany’s.
He was, in fact, two out of three.
I understand that, up until a few years ago, the response of any German to the question “Who was Hitler?” was “Oh, he built the Autobahn and made the trains run on time...”
