So You've Bombed Syria. What Next?

Any serious peace plan needs to put security front and center.

For more than two years, impassioned advocates have called for U.S. military intervention in Syria in order to advance a peace settlement. Now, in the wake of last week's horrific chemical weapons attack in a suburb of Damascus, military intervention finally looks imminent. But what of the prospects for peace?

At the moment, views are split within and outside the Obama administration over whether the United States should strike Bashar al-Assad merely to punish him for using chemical weapons -- reasserting U.S. regional credibility in the process -- or take sustained action to degrade the regime's capacity to wage war and move the parties toward a peace deal. This is a false choice. No matter the intensity or duration of the strike package, U.S. missiles are likely to open the best window yet to catalyze negotiations, something the United States and Russia have failed to do in a series of abortive attempts to hold a peace conference in Geneva. It is therefore critical that the administration seize this fleeting opportunity to hasten the end of the war as it formulates its military plans.

What happens when a rocket hits one of the US destroyers and it rolls over and sinks? All on National TV. Remember—this will be (without a UN OK—an act of war—we will be in effect at war with Syria and her allies) Syria will be within her rights to counter attack the USA—maybe with Gas—or just hand them over to the Terrorists for free—to use on US! Wild card is Russia—they could take out our ships in a limited naval war as part of their treaty to defend Syria—they would be in their legal rights. OR worse....

No one has considered that Syria’s Air Defense systems were supplied by Russia, and probably manned by Russians. What will happen when we start killing Russians??

RE: "Not enough questions at the hearing ...regarding as to just what is the composition of the opposition."
Agree in full. I watched the total hearing as well. Lurch continues to use evasive tactics on that question.
As well as on the question raised again and again as to how long this "limited" strike MO would take. The guy is so evasive on many questions raised.
And as for the question regarding how would the US establish who might gain access to the CW stock piles if the regiem does fall.
No clear cut answer provided.
