This is unconfirmed and very early on (it just went beyond the "breaking news" headline at the top of the Reuters page)

Russia’s early warning radars have detected the launch of two ballistic rockets in the eastern Mediterranean, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated. The launch reportedly took place at 06:16 GMT Tuesday.

The trajectory of the missiles is reported to have been from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea towards the eastern landmass.

Russia’s President Putin has already been informed about the incident by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Well, it's unlikely to be us, we wouldn't be ballistic-missile, we'd be cruise-missile.

If anything at all, it would be some rebels on a boat trying to start WWIII.

I’m starting to think that was ours that tested their radars, and Israel claimed it as their test.

That would explain the confusion shortly after it happened about who did it.

“A senior Israeli defence official confirmed to the BBC that a missile had been fired on Tuesday to test its defence systems.

The defence ministry said Israel’s Arrow missile defence system had successfully detected and tracked a Sparrow medium-range guided missile fired as part of the test.

The BBC’s Richard Galpin in Jerusalem says tests like this are usually planned long in advance, but it is still a sign that the Israeli military is taking very seriously the possibility that US air strikes, if they do happen, could lead to retaliatory attacks on Israel - either by Syria itself or by its ally, the Shia militia Hezbollah in Lebanon”

Amid contradictory reports Israel, U.S. carry out joint missile test in the Mediterranean. Russia had detected the launch of two ballistic ‘objects’ toward the sea, Russian media reported earlier; U.S. Navy earlier denied having any involvement in the launch

Israel and the U.S. carried out a missile test in the Mediterranean sea on Tuesday, Israel’s Defense Ministry said in a statement, amid rising tensions in the region over the crisis in Syria.

The confirmation came after morning reports indicated that Russia had detected two ballistic “objects” launched toward the eastern Mediterranean from the central part of the same and a U.S. denial that its navy had been involved.

The Arrow III missile defense system was tested with a “sparrow” missile, which simulates a ballistic missile, and is launched from a plane, during the exercise.
