Russian radar detected two ballistic "objects" that were fired towards the eastern Mediterranean from the central part of the sea on Tuesday, state-run news agency RIA quoted the Defence Ministry as saying.

"...Russias Defense Ministry said Tuesday citing its ballistic missile early warning system."
FYI, Russians are often misconstrued in translation, the system tracks all objects and airfoil objects can be mislabeled.
Here is the reason you are probably correct: The launch was detected at 10:16 Moscow time (06:16 GMT) by a radar in the southern Russian city of Armavir,...
That's far enough to require some altitude to be detected,...unless the detection was remote by a Russian T-50 (or earlier) AWACS.

Israel says carries out joint missile test with U.S. in the Med.
JERUSALEM, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Israel said it carried out a test of a missile, used as a target in a U.S.-funded anti-missile system, in the Mediterranean on Tuesday. The Israeli Defence Ministry said the test was conducted at 9:15 a.m. (0615 GMT), about the same time that Russia’s state-run RIA news agency reported that Russian radar had detected the launch of two ballistic “objects” in the Mediterranean.

Test missiles? At a time it could ignite WWIII? Nobody’s that insane.
And then they claimed it was a joint op.....
They never fib..... ha.
Apparently the IDF is ‘kinda doing their own thing’ for this dust-up. Obama likely hopes Israel will burn...
...there was a joint exercise of some sort........testing...*smiles*
False radar signal to see what a reaction may be?
“Test missiles? At a time it could ignite WWIII? Nobodys that insane.”
Test launches are generally well announced in advance. There are maritime warnings to ensure ships aren’t in the target area.
It’s unlikely anyone would attack Syria with ballistic missiles. Generally, ballistic missiles have high yield warheads. That’s like shooting a fly with a Remington 12ga. Cruise missiles have small warheads and destroy the target by exploding directly over it. Nobody’s likely to have the targeting information necessary as any target worth hitting will be well hidden by now.
This is all escalating quickly
Testing Syrian and Russian radars.
I think it is a preplanned US-Israel missile defense test, that they were not going to forego, *especially* because of the situation in Syria. The largest radar in Israel is run by the U.S. DoD.
World Wars have started on lesser events.
Wait, weren’t there planned military exercises in the area any way? Remember, Obama pulled out and said we would not participate in the exercises with Syria....
I don’t remember the dates those were supposed to happen.
Nonetheless, testing missiles in that tinderbox right now does appear very provocative.
Ballistic and cruise missiles have the same general range in payload. Conventional warheads are between 1000 and 2000 lbs.
It would appear that the “test” failed.
can you point to the blogs/forums on that?
I’m well past trusting the U.S. media on any reporting in this mess(read: I don’t wait for NYT-AP-CNN to verify intel). However, until the internet crashes, there are still pieces that can be put together to get the bottom of this. And I suggest we start doing just that.
Hint: many foreign media, and outlets providing ‘less-sanitized’ and more credible information. Got that, NSA?
“Ballistic and cruise missiles have the same general range in payload.”
I suppose things have improved, but the circular error probability with ballistic missiles has not been generally good. Also, you need to know where the targets are and there has been too much coverage of the subject to believe the Syrians haven’t dispersed and/or spoofed the targets. Also, ballistic missiles tend to set off multiple alarms in neighboring countries and could lead to an accidental engagement. If we provide prior knowledge of a launch to the Russians we’d might as well stay home because the targets won’t be there. (This is all about image and politics. If it were about smacking the hell out of Assad, the only way to do that is with no prior warning. The opportunity of surprise has not only been thrown away, it was shredded first.)
“If anything at all, it would be some rebels on a boat trying to start WWIII.”
When is the last time anyone saw McCain? :)
