The Obama administration, bolstered by evidence the Syrian government used lethal sarin gas on its own people, expressed confidence Sunday that Congress would back President Obamas decision for a military strike on the Middle East country.
The comment underscored the risk Obama took in deciding over the weekend to seek approval from Congress, a step King argues he didn't need to take.
Kerry told Fox News Sunday that he couldnt imagine Congress would turn its back on Israel or other U.S. allies in the region and on the Syrians slaughtered in the Aug. 21 chemical weapon attack, allegedly ordered by President Bashar al-Assad.
I can't contemplate that Congress would turn its back on all of that responsibility, Kerry said. I dont believe Congress will do that.
Kerrys comments and the White House blitz were the latest in a series of dramatic turn of events since the chemical weapon attack two weeks ago outside Damascus that killed more than 1,400 people including hundreds of women and children.
The White House official confirms on Sunday the president called Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain over the weekend to invite him to the White House on Monday, the same day Obama will hold another conference call with House members.

“McCain would be a good VP for Obama.
They BOTH hate Americans, hate the Constitution,
and LOVE al Qaeda and their crucifixions, slavery,
murders, rapes and, of course, cannibalism.”
They are both legends in their own minds.
“And as for Syria? Well....theres just something about this gas-episode that doesnt add up. If you were ahead in the game and doing well against the civil war crowd....why screw things up? It just sounds like some baby-milk-factory episode, if you ask me...made for journalism.”
Exactly. Unless Assad is a total idiot or out of control of his forces, this doesn’t add up. Only thing I could think of is he thought Russia would give him cover for it.
Breaking news: Rebels admit gas attack result of mishandling chemical weapons
The House should be very clear that a resounding “NO!” means NO!
It actually goes far beyond just this aggression into a nation where the US has ZERO national interest. The real issue is the unconstitutional power that has been taken by a hundred years of US presidents.
It began at the start of the “progressive era” under Teddy Roosevelt. In a show of machismo and belligerence, Roosevelt wanted to send the new US navy, bristling with battleships, around the world, to, in effect, try to intimidate and menace the entire world.
And congress said No! Congress refused to break the bank and give Roosevelt a blank check to intimidate the rest of the world. The US was already a world power because we *had* the navy. But Teddy Roosevelt wanted us to in effect rule the world.
Roosevelt did not capitulate. Instead he ordered the US Navy to go to the other side of the world. Halfway.
“If congress wants a navy, then they must pay to bring them back.” Such was his unprincipled arrogance.
While congress agreed to pay for the return of the US navy, the result was *not* what Roosevelt expected. The rest of the world did not cower before our might, but instead began building their own battleship navies. And submarine navies. And even some of the first aircraft carriers.
The end result of which was that when the opportunity for World War I presented itself, the carnage was staggering.
However, and this is the important part, the US president taking the power of appropriations for the military away from congress was an awful precedent; which Woodrow Wilson followed up with a rubber stamp war from congress in World War I.
Right now, Obama is considering a poorly thought out scheme against one small part of an axis of nations opposed by an alliance of nations, not unlike World War I.
Syria is aligned with the eastern half of Lebanon and Hezbollah, Iran, Russia, and with considerable Shiite sympathies in Iraq.
The Syrian rebels have the support of Saudi Arabia, France, Egypt, some degree of support from Pakistan, Chechnya, Iraq’s Sunnis, and marginal support from the US and England.
The Turks, Kurds, western Lebanese, Hamas in Gaza, Fatah in the West Bank, Jordan, Yemen, and several European nations are off to the side, but might get dragged in.
All the players want to drag Israel in.
The best outcome we can hope for is that this mess continues until Syria is a smoking hole, and that Iranian and Russian weapons are destroyed as soon as they get there.
But the US must avoid throwing our hand it if at all possible. Our efforts should be in keeping other hands *out* of Syria as well.
They say they can’t impeach Obama. They are unable to repeal Obamacare. Well, here is an opportunity to deliver a beat down to Obama that is long overdue, and that he quite clearly deserves. He has dissed Congress for a term of a half now. He has been doing end-arounds, and crapping on the Constitution. Congress should now deliver Obama a vote of no confidence on this one.
McCain met with the rebels. Aiding the enemy. Probably the one that got them the chem weapons. Lock him away, guys.
Every Republican should simply vote “Present.” Let the Democrats take sole responsibility for this fiasco. If the Democrats vote to authorize military action, they will have to explain themselves to the American people. If they vote against military action, Obama will throw the biggest hissy fit anyone has ever seen.
I agree with you, but Congress seems to run along hidden lines these days. I don’t know what’s going on in the backrooms.
Perhaps it will finally cause something to blow up in his face and stir folks to more vigorous action to put us on the right track. Pretty sad deal when the worst case scenario might be the best case in the long run...
A well-stated and information post. Thank you!
Syria already said they would attack Israel if we attack them.....I believe them.
I would say that if the Republicans go along with this that they are dead to me, but I already threw the shroud on them months ago.
Maybe that’s what Obama is counting on...
How do republicans think that this will help them in 2014?
It would be Obamas luck that the house goes democrat because the republicans get voted out because they voted for authorization.
“Flood the zone”? Is that politician thug speak for “blackmail them with their NSA files”?
“The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.” Psalm 18:4
Trying to drum up support for a new war and tossing around references likening the effort to a ‘flood’ should be avoided by these Belshazzar’s occupying the white house,
God uses the same idioms to refer to war and of how the end would come,
“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.” Isaiah 59:19
And as recorded in Daniel, this happened in August of 70 AD, and will happen again:
“and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”
Daniel 9:26
