What ‘The Butler’ gets wrong about Ronald Reagan and race [movie falsely portrays Reagan as racist]
Washington Post ^ | August 29, 2013 | Steven F. Hayward, Paul Kengor, Craig Shirley and Kiron K. Skinner

Posted on 09/01/2013 5:16:37 PM PDT by grundle

Steven F. Hayward, Paul Kengor, Craig Shirley and Kiron K. Skinner are Ronald Reagan historians.

One cold evening in Dixon, Ill., in the early 1930s, a young man known as Dutch Reagan brought home two African American teammates from his Eureka College football team. The team was on the road, and the local hotels had refused the two black players. So Reagan invited them to spend the night and have breakfast with his family.

In November 1952, in one of his final meetings as president of Hollywood’s Screen Actors Guild, Ronald Reagan called upon the entertainment industry to provide greater employment for black actors. His stand went against the times and received national media attention.

As president, in the same March 1983 speech in which he called the Soviet regime an “evil empire,” Reagan decried “the resurgence of some hate groups preaching bigotry and prejudice” in America. And at a reception for the National Council of Negro Women in July of that year, Reagan declared: “I’ve lived a long time, but I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t believe that prejudice and bigotry were the worst of sins.”

These are just a few examples of Reagan’s sensitivity to racial discrimination. This attitude was instilled by his mother, who was deeply involved in the Disciples of Christ, and his father, who refused to allow him to see the movie “Birth of a Nation” because it glorified the Ku Klux Klan.

But you don’t get any sense of that in the film “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

Didn’t Reagan star in an anti-klan movie once?

Yes he did, Storm Warning where he played a DA prosecuting a murder case involving the klan. To say the least Pres. Reagan in this role put the klan in a very negative light, but we must not shatter any liberal’s illusions.

Did anyone actually believe Hollyweird would make a movie showing Reagan, or any conservative, in anything but a negative image?

Michael Reagan has spoken out against his father’s portrayal in the movie, but where are Ron and Patty? Such freaking liberal ingrates they cant even defend their father. And it was such a hatchet job on the real butlers life, to further a political agenda. Yeah, they changed the Butler’s name but everyone knows who’s life it was supposedly based on. This will become his family’s history based on lies, his family should be mad, to. For instance, the real butler was married 60 plus years to one woman who the movie shows having an affair that never happened, and he didn’t have a second son that protested and the butler never quit his job over civil rights.

There was nothing really new and good out in those two weeks it was number one, so there’s also that.

That movie came out 43 years ago when Hollyweird would occasionally make a decent pro-American movie. But Patton was a soldier and not a politician.

I keep praying for conservative alternatives to Hollywood to emerge.

why do movies only push a liberal message, never a conservative, or even just a truthful story telling of this man’s life?

Everyone knew this movie would trash Reagan when they picked the Traitor Jane Fonda to play Nancy.

The movie could have been great it was about a good man, but they decided to fill it with garbage and ,make a racist movie out of it.
