For more than a week, the White House had been barreling toward imminent military action against Syria. But President Barack Obama's abrupt decision to instead ask Congress for permission left him with a high-risk gamble that could devastate his credibility if no action is ultimately taken in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack that crossed his own "red line."
The stunning reversal also raises questions about the president's decisiveness and could embolden leaders in Syria, Iran, North Korea and elsewhere, leaving them with the impression of a U.S. president unwilling to back up his words with actions.
The president, in a hastily announced statement Saturday in the White House Rose Garden, argued that he did in fact have the power to act on his own. But faced with the prospect of taking action opposed by many Americans, the commander in chief tried to shift the burden and instead round up partners on Capitol Hill to share in that responsibility.

he’s like a stealth predator coming in to the kill with the heart of platypus and the courage of none. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Er...ummmm...that too, but more like a monkey with a live hand grenade.
Are you kidding? Doesn’t know the meaning of the word, concept.
Are you kidding? Doesn’t know the meaning of the word, concept.
I don’t see how that will help Dems, as the vast majority of Americans do not support military action.
The onbly way it will hurt Republicans, is if they go along with Valerie and little Barry
Last line from the article
Poor BO. Not only is his incompetence showing world wide, now Putin b****-slaps him too.
Assad was playing spades? lol, he has that in commom with VPrez 0bama (Jarrett is shadow POTUS) VPrez 0bama was playing spades while the Benghazi consulate was being overrun and destroyed, with loss of life.
I go with...........a monkey with a banana peel.
Or if they say no, then another chem attack occurs. It’ll be the headline from that point through election day. I would tend to think the overwhelming disapproval of everything this admin stands for would hold some sway over what has happened over the last half decade....but here we are.
Yep. He has painted himself into a bind that makes him make a decision and either way he goes, it will not be good for him, us, or anyone else.
Thanks lbryce.
Julie Page wrote this? Julie, honey, if you're trolling the 'net looking for mentions of your name, let me inform you of something: Obama HAS NO CREDIBILITY with any sentient being. He is a joke. A liar. A poser. A pretender.
Your ilk in the media have never seriously scrutinized his past, his policies, or his prevarications because, I think, you're enamored with the myth around him.
Frank Marshall Davis, for instance, is never mentioned by you people...imagine if George W Bush or Ronald Reagan had been mentored as a child by, say, Robert Welch Jr? Do you even know who that is? Believe me, if these men HAD been taught by him, you would know his name...because every aspect of the life of a Republican is scoured....but this Clown's life is washed over and ignored.
Is Boehner Man Enough to lead on this?
On a purely military note: With operational security blown, with the element of surprise gone, with high visibility naval units in restricted waters, even the Syrians could cost us a ship. The Brits realize this as a lesson from the Falklands, where they lost naval units to very inferior forces.
Remember how quickly our own Hawks jumped on the Bomb Bosnia band wagon.
McCain wanted to nuke Belgrade.
he has credibility??
who knew
He reminds me more of a war malingerer. Someone who waits to see how the battle unfolds, and once the fighting is over, runs out, picks up a dead enemy's shield as a trophy and declares himself the hero who led the charge.
I do not pretend to have the monopoly on the empty suit as White Hut homesteader as the only one with the goods on him.
GayMuzzie (my favorite title for him contributed to me via a poster). Your insight, cogent observation is as good as any,
as good as mine :-) (wink, wink)
Credibility and THE FOREIGNER should never be said in the same breath. Even by the little twits at Yahoo
Heh, heh, that’s what I was referring to in a satirical way. Obama has never been held liable for anything his regime does, so I was proposing we apply the same standards to Assad.
The Russian-made anti-ship missiles will be hit first, and maybe that’s all that will be hit. At first, anyway. The US involvement in Libya involved air raids, but Libya’s a whole lot of nothing and all spread out, mostly close to the Med. The populated area of Syria wraps around Lebanon, follows the Med north, then follows the river eastward.
Zero tried to get Congress to rise to the bait. No one bit. He’s now got to act, or to back down and look like the big-talking jackass that is all that he is. All his sponsors who have handed him everything throughout his life are either no longer alive or not returning his calls. He’s alone now.
The longer he waits to act, the more public opinion will turn against him.
I very much doubt that his agenda in Congress and in the state legislatures controlled by the Demagogic Party will be allowed to stall or lapse, though.
