Al Qaeda grows as its leaders focus on the 'near enemy'

Syria is increasingly becoming a hotbed for jihadist movements and Al Zawahiri devoted a sizeable portion of his latest speech to urging young Muslims to join the jihad in that country. Al Zawahiri will not offer to relinquish his influence over jihadist movements in the Arab world. By contacting Al Qaeda affiliates, he is trying to flex his muscles to regain influence over jihadists in Syria and to show his importance as the emir of Al Qaeda as a trademark of jihadism. This is important for the unity of the movement, which plays a major role in attracting individuals to the Salafi-jihadist push around the world.

Although attacking the West is still a priority for Al Zawahiri, he is mainly interested in expanding the jihadists' presence and increasing their acceptance in Arab countries: the so-called near enemy.

In addition to Syria, Al Zawahiri is aiming to exploit the frustration felt by Islamists from what they describe as a coup in Egypt. On August 3, he said that "what happened [in Egypt by ousting Muhammad Morsi] is the biggest proof of the failure of democratic means to achieve an Islamic government".

Al Qaeda is clearly trying to take over and dominate the Arab countries.

Are we going to help them take over Syria -- we already helped them to try to take over Egypt, which, fortunately is failing...

“the smartest man in the world” is as stupid as his muslim faith. He has screwed himself into the ground smack in the middle between bandar and khameini.

Where have you been?

Obama's entire foreign policy is dedicated to supporting Sunnis everywhere.....that includes the Saudi Royal Family, Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda.

any US military strike into Syria, especially a wimpy half vast attack telegraphed in advance as a mere “show” would be galvanizing, a fantastic recruiting tool for al Qaeda

but then, maybe that is why obama and Kerry are being set up to do it by brennan and valjar

allu akhbar

I believe this was all described by Bin Laden in a very early al Qaeda diatribe

the first enemy to be defeated are non salafist, non sunni muslims- shia and other sects- hence the past decade of brutal muslims killing muslims. Hence the House of Saud support for al Qaeda

then Israel

then the corrupt western culture represented by the “great satan”, the US
