I agree with you that African American should never be used,

Agreed....at least by the 3rd generation American, the hyphen should disappear.
My G Grandfather ‘may’ have been Irish-American possibly the same for my Grandfather - who you could ‘call’ Irish or American BUT I don’t think he would refer to himself as the hyphenated kind...
Of course, by the time it gets to me it is just AMERICAN of Irish descent.
I would ‘invite’ all the self so called African-Americans to see what they would think of a trip to the ‘Motherland’.
Think ‘Paulie Walnuts’ and his trip to ‘the other side’.
where the ‘natives’ were continually belittling the ‘Italian-Americans’ that were visiting them. ‘Priceless’ scene when he basically told an Italian chef he didn’t know how to cook (real) Italian food.......BUT when he got back to NJ he wouldn’t stop talking about the wonderful trip - one he surely didn’t like.
Back in the 70’s I (my company) used to hire Exchange students as asphalt laborers, and as a rule, the African Blacks wanted NOTHING to do with the American Blacks - I had a ‘straw boss/sub foreman’ (Black) who they would ‘refuse’ to listen to but I found for the most part they were good workers BUT they surely did NOT like the ‘new worlders’.
The fruits & vegetables taste so good when you grow your own and don't have to have them shipped, "pesticided", etc.
I miss it so much. Mr. hummingbird and I plan to visit the homestead when the weather gets cooler. I can't wait!
