Sherry West's daughter says mother's account of baby Antonio shooting 'doesn't add up'

The adult daughter of a woman whose baby was fatally shot in his stroller testified Wednesday that her mother's account of what happened that day didn't add up.

A defense lawyer called Ashley Glassey to testify in the murder trial of his client, De'Marquise Elkins, who is charged in the March 21 killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in coastal Georgia.

Glassey's mother, Sherry West, has said she was walking home from the Brunswick post office with Antonio in a stroller when Elkins, 18, and another teen approached her and demanded money. After she told them she didn't have any, Elkins shot her in the leg and then shot the baby in the face, West has said.

Glassey, 21, lives in New Jersey and testified through tears that she had only seen her mother for a few hours on one occasion since she was 8 years old.

Glassey said her mother called her at 8:30 p.m. the day of the shooting. West told her daughter two kids had come up to her and asked for money and then shot the baby and then her when she said she had none, Glassey said. When Glassey asked for more details, West changed the story to say she was shot first and the baby second, Glassey said.

Glassey's grandmother had died the summer before and she had collected her grandmother's life insurance policy to cover expenses, Glassey said. Her mother knew that and called to ask how fast Glassey thought it would take for her to get the payment from a life insurance policy she had taken out on the baby.

"The whole conversation just didn't settle well with me," Glassey said.

I assumed that this tragedy was the result of events described by the mother until I saw the tape of her responses to police questioning. This needs to be carefully sorted out. The black guys may be thugs with guns, but they also may be innocent.

-----------

It could also be a middle scenario. The black teens are thugs and are guilty of shooting the baby in the face. Thus guilty of murder and should be sentenced harshly.

But there's the possibility the mother may have been in on the murder. $5000 seems like nothing to a normal, sane person; but for filth with no money, a poor parenting history, and who doesn't want their current child it could be incentive. It's odd that the baby got blasted in the face but the mother merely got shot in the arm. You would think a murderer would off the only witness (especially if he's callous enough to kill a baby), but he may have wanted to let her live for a later payoff.

Who know's? I'm interested in hearing further testimony in this case.

Also, if she did it, where’s the gun?

Exactly. A gun disposed of by one of Elkins' family members has already been found in a pond, and Elkins' accomplice gave him up already.

30 years ago Diane Downs claimed that a hippie shot her three kids and wounded her. Back in the 90s Susan Smith claimed that a black man threw her out of her car and took her children. It’s happened before.

What about the forensics on the bullet trajectory? Could she reasonably have shot herself in the leg at that angle? If her story was a lie how were police able to apprehend the suspects based on some made up description and the suspect not have some alibi? Since she is white and the suspects is Black why aren’t the race hustlers rallying saying he is innocent and a victim of racism? This is about as believable as the suspects in murdering the 88 year old WW-II veteran claiming he was selling them crack.

And they just were standing there when the gun used floated down out of the sky and they took it to their Aunt so she could report it and on the way she tripped and the gun flew out of her hand and landed in the water.

Makes perfect sense.

In those two cases no one was ever apprehended based on the description, nor found to have had a family member dispose of the weapon used and the weapon recovered.

There is all kinds of forensic evidence in this case pointing at the thugs with guns, including a confession of the accessory thug.

This type of random excessive violence from feral youth is reported on a weekly basis, jogger shot in the back, 89 year old WWII vet beaten to death, so why is this one so hard to believe?

I think those who want to blame the mother in some way are suffering from normalcy bias. They do not want to see that civilization is teetering on the edge of the cliff, so they look for other explanations that let them tell themselves that everything is alright and chaos is not overwhelming civilization.

Winter is coming.

I don't really see that here.

She is a marginal person living in a marginal neighborhood. Their responses to police are going to be cagey and suspicious. They don't talk, act, or think like middle-class educated people.

But it's a far shout from that to murdering your own baby for a pittance. Especially hiring a couple of teenage thugs to do it for you.

And the idea that she would arrange to be shot in the leg and ear to 'add verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative' is preposterous. No matter what sort of lowlife you are, you don't ask the hit man to shoot you too, especially not in the head. What if his shoddy cheap pistol threw a little left?

Well, you'd think FReepers would have learned something from the Zimmerman case, but . . .

What you hear in the news media is what they want you to hear. They are desperate to have another Susan Smith to deflect from the constant barrage of politically incorrect crime. They would love for this to be true. So you are going to hear every nutty theory presented as fact, and every countervailing fact will be suppressed.

Wait for the cross exam of the estranged daughter (assuming the news media reports it). It's just as likely (given that she has no love for her bio-mom) that she has at the very least embroidered this tale. No independent corroboration of anything that she said has been reported.

Even without the mother's identification, you have the confession of the accomplice, as well as the fact that the defendant's mother and aunt disposed of the murder weapon and each tried to give him an alibi (unfortunately they thought of 2 different alibis). I'll grant you that the criminal element may give an alibi just on general principles, but possession of the murder weapon is a bit hard to overcome.

Try watching the interviews with the little innocent darlings and their family members who helped them in the cover up.

As for the mom I would say she has been living in a nightmare world since her baby was murdered in front of her and being accused of the killing would just be one more thing in a long line of unbelievable happenings.

But sure.

The sweet kids were just walking down the street, probably on their way home from cleaning up the parks when suddenly.... the gun used floated down out of the sky and they took it to their Aunt so she could report it and on the way she tripped and the gun flew out of her hand and landed in the water.

And the mother, who actually was the murderess, telepathically let them know that she was describing them to the police so they should run and hide.

And the confession from the other thug was just because he was so saddened that the baby died that he felt someone should take responsibility and so he confessed just so they would have someone to punish.

Makes total sense.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the update. I did qualify it by saying I was judging by the “evidence” presented in the article. The actions of the killer are so stupid, sordid, idiotic, I found it hard to credit her account.

I figured the good citizens of Cobb County would give those squirrelly theories the attention they deserved.

The media really has an awful lot to answer for. They don't just do a bad job reporting the news, they deliberately mislead their readers. You just have to assume that everything you read is a lie.
