SOUP FOR THE TROOPS

WELCOME TO THE

(where our troops, allies and their families can refresh themselves)

Good morning, Everyone.

Good morning

Thank you, Ma, for preparing the Canteen
for today's activities
Alrighty, I've already had problems
trying to post this morning.
Had my morning post all set
and got the dreaded twirling rainbow.
This has not been a very good week for me.

DC METROLAND WEATHER

~ Today...Some clouds this morning
will give way to generally sunny skies
for the afternoon. High 84F.
Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph.

~ Tonight... Generally clear. Low 67F.
Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.

Making Z Zoup
A cup of this...a teaspoon of that...

Before anybody called it "yo-yo"
(meaning "come back" or "return" in the native language
of the Philippines, Tagalog),
it was popular in seventeenth- through nineteenth-century Europe
under many names, including "quiz," "bandalore,"
"l'emigrette," "coblentz," and "incroyable."
It was called "disk" by the ancient Greeks.

Bob Denver wasn't the first choice,
nor even in the running,
for the lead part of television's "Gilligan's Island."
Jerry Van Dyke was the original choice,
but he turned it down.
The William Morris Agency then recommended Denver for the part,
but "Gilligan's Island" creator Sherwood Schwartz
couldn't imagine him in the role
because Denver had been so convincing as the bearded,
not-too-bright beatnik Maynard G. Krebs
in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."
Schwartz and Denver finally had a meeting,
and Schwartz was surprised that Denver was actually
a well-read, quiet professional.
Before his success in "Dobie Gillis,"
Denver had been a school teacher. Denver became Gilligan,
and the show ran for three seasons.
Even 25 years after its last episode was filmed,
it is still one of the most-widely syndicated TV shows
in television history.

In Gulliver's Travels Jonathan Swift
described the two moons of Mars,
Phobos and Deimos,
giving their exact size and speeds of rotation.
He did this more that a hundred years
before either moon was discovered.

In Breton, Alabama, there is a law on the town's books
against riding down the street in a motorboat.
(those crazy Alabamans)

Every time it erupts,
Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park
spurts up to 8,000 gallons of 199-degree water
about 140 feet into the air.

The FR Canteen is ALWAYS

Come in, sit down.
Grab a cup of joe, or tasty tea.
Mingle a bit, chat with the troops
or family member.
There's always plenty of conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS in the FR Canteen.

REMEMBER THEM ~ DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

Howdy Hi Beachie!

Egads, where did the summer go?!

It's my Friday today too, son-boy will be in town and last minute fun is on the way.

It's cooling down around here with some rain.

OK, we'll see ya next week...

Have a great Labor Day weekend!
