It’s coming: US finalizing plans for military strike on Syria

Published time: August 28, 2013 16:28 Get short URL

Two unnamed White House officials told the Associated Press that the Obama administration is still deciding on what Syrian targets will be attacked and to what degree during a military strike that now seems inevitable.

While the strike itself will be conducted only after the White House presents the public with what it believes is “undeniable” proof of chemical weapon use carried out by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, intelligence agencies and policy makers are struggling to decide what goals they hope to achieve by launching an attack.

One of the officials granted anonymity to speak to the AP said, "If there is action taken, it must be clearly defined what the objective is and why" and based on "clear facts.” Meanwhile, another official briefed on a potential strike told the Los Angeles Times that the White House may opt for an attack "just muscular enough not to get mocked," but one that wouldn’t be severe enough to warrant a response from Syrian allies Iran and Russia.

"They are looking at what is just enough to mean something, just enough to be more than symbolic," the Times quoted the source as saying.

The US and its allies already have enough resources throughout the region to strike Syria at any moment. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said earlier this week that the American military “was in place to be able to fulfill and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take.” Once Pres. Obama authorizes a strike, he said, US forces were “ready to go, like that.”

In other words, the administration is admitting that their actions will be, essentially, pointless!

Yet, it is unavoidable that some people will die as "collateral damage" -- a la Clinton's night watchman in the Baghdad office tower.

What a disgusting turn of events -- ineffective action, innocent deaths...all so His Nibs can say he did...something.

9% support the Clown’s push for U.S. treasure (and possibly lives) to be spent supporting Al-Qaeda backed rebels in Syria.

On shaky evidence.

With no UN approval.

“undeniable” proof

Maybe the obama crowd will use obama's birth certificate as their proof. Would make as much sense as anything else.

Meanwhile, we await the combined Russian/Chinese reaction to Obama’s horse sh*t.

World War III by September?

It’s bad enough this feckless clown in the White House has ruined the economy with his socialist crap; now he’s going to engineer the incineration of the nation he hates so much (the United States)?

It is NOT the U.S. acting in Syria.

It is Hussein and the shadowy cabal which gives the orders behind the scenes.

Too bad America doesn’t have a Congress willing to do its job.

Obama should be aware that there are some big boys standing at the sidelines in this fight, right now, and any attempt for the US to jump in will be greeted with an inordinate degree of hostility.

Russia is a player here, and they are supporting Bashar al-Assad. The Chinese are an interested party as well (they are looking to build influence in the Middle East), and Iran is trying to form a crescent stretched around and through Syria, the more effectively to confront Israel AND the Sunni Arabic faction on the Arabian Peninsula.

The Current Regime now squatting the White Hut may not realize it, but nobody gives them much respect.

And jumping in now is no way to build it, either.

... now he’s going to engineer the incineration of the nation he hates so much (the United States)?

He's going for a 'two-fer' .... the Syrians have said if Damascus is hit, Tel Aviv will burn. So ... Obummer can provoke incineration of the United States AND Israel with the same 'I'm-a-macho-man' action. Israel, being in proximity, will get the worst of it - I'm sure the Israel haters in the White Hut are dancing a jig.

I’m so glad this is being kept secret so it will be a surprise and US airmen will have the optimum conditions to get in and get out safely.

It might be time for America to pay the piper for her corrupt black president.

This won’t end well.

With no UN approval.

Indeed, no approval of any sort...from anybody.

Probably True: Chemical weapons were used in Syria.

Unproven Assumption: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad or someone in his chain of command ordered and authorized the attack with chemical weapons.

Unproven Assumption: Chemical weapons were used by anti-Assad forces who then blamed Assad for their use.

Question: Does the Unites States or any other nation have a moral obligation to punish those who use chemical weapons?

Bingo. None of what 0bama does is on behalf of the U.S. or it’s interests. That was quite obvious when 0bama asked Mubarak to step down and Hitlery was practically sleeping with Morsi and the MB of Egypt.

We seem to have ushered in a new era of strategic military thought, the “muscular enough not to be mocked” theory of war. Forget Clausewitz, Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Moltke, and Forrest, we’re going with Monty Python.

"Does the Unites States or any other nation have a moral obligation to punish those who use chemical weapons?"

IMO, YES. But ONLY if the same degree of urgency is applied to Americans in distress at our embassies, such as Benghazi. There's a certain inconsistency here; Muslim lives vs. American lives in Benghazi, hmmmm..

I don’t think it is the military we are waiting on for a plan. I believe the decider in chief is probably trying to figure out how to attack with nerf balls and achieve a “ muscular “ image that has evaded him his entire life.
