Yes, it's shocking. California automaker Tesla Motors is outselling a number of very well established vehicle brands in its home state—with only one model: the all-electric Model S.
In June, Tesla outsold (on the basis of registrations) Buick, Lincoln, Porsche, Volvo, and Cadillac—and far outsold Jaguar and Land Rover combined. And the long-established, full-line luxury brand Infiniti only posted just 51 more registrations in the state than Tesla.
This wasn't just a monthly sales blip, either. Even on a year-to-date basis, through June, Tesla has sold more vehicles in California than Land Rover, Jaguar, Lincoln, Volvo, or Porsche.

This car is best for a defined commute; it really isn’t an ideal car to take a trip in. Of course, that is what we did. We took about a 200-mile (round trip) jaunt to see a new Blu-Home (high-end green manufactured house). Despite the advertised 285 mile range, it was clear early on that we wouldn’t have enough battery, so we drove to the local Tesla store to charge up. The one Tesla S charger was in use, the generic charger was in use, the 240-volt socket didn’t match the Tesla’s 240-volt plug, and someone had stolen the adapter for the remaining Tesla roadster charger. We were SOL (technical term). After a nice chat with the Tesla folks at the store – they remind me a lot of the Apple store folks, very nice and well informed but often can’t do anything to really help you – we were off on our adventure.
First problem: Find someplace for lunch that has a charger. We found a shopping center with two chargers, both open. They took an RFID card, which we didn’t have, but they didn’t seem to care, so we charged while we ate. It wasn’t charged enough when we were done, though, so after visiting the house we went and saw Superman (great movie by the way) at a theater that had a charger. This did require the credit card, but we were able to log into the website, enter our credit card information, and we were charging again. The movie theater, in Napa Valley, had wine, good wine, and that added to the experience. After we came out the car had enough juice for us to get home with about 45 miles to spare. Charging the car overnight on 110 (an owner would have a 240 socket installed) we had enough juice to drive to Gilroy and try and a Super Charger. These are free from Tesla, and in around 2 hours the car was at maximum capacity (it likely got there faster, but these chargers are at an outlet mall and we had to shop, I think that is the 11th commandment).
Oh I comprehendo and read well past “most” deans at HAAAHVAAHD, and when this overpriced, subsidized window dressing car’s batteries drop dead, my Cobra will still be running right past. What’s more, it will run on methanol from the many hay bales on the place— chopped, fermented and distilled at extremely low cost. Drink the corn liquor and burn the methanol, the way it was supposed to be before Bob Dull and ADM.
Facts: So sorry- Certified at 0-60 mph in 3.5 and the quarter mile in 11.5
Don’t need to stop at 244 miles for a charge (that is, if you happen to roll right up to a proprietary charging station which are nowhere). A limited use, expensive overpriced subsidized toy.
Have gone 416 plus miles in range before re-fuel.
Will say one thing, if the muzzies succeed in an EMP weapon, neither of these vehicles will work. But my 71 Boss sure will, and it is warmed regularly.

The Tesla isn’t a do-everything car, but will beat most gasoline-engined cars when it comes to performance. That’s my original claim and nothing you’ve said so far falsifies it.
At least it’s an improvement that you no longer need to talk about suppressed distractions like challenges to your sexual identity or phallus lengths, the purse reference notwithstanding. This is good, it’s a start to not letting inanimate objects like cars define your orientation.
Completely loaded (top end model with every available option including rear facing seats and the snow package) it’s around $125,000 (before tax incentives). You can easily get it for around $90-100K. Expensive sure but it’s not for everyone.
They still sold more of the Model S than Audi did A8’s, Mercedes S Class, Lexus LS, BMW 7 nationwide.
According to DOE, 96% of daily commutes in US are less than 20 miles, even if you add running errands, dropping and picking up kids from school, etc. Tesla is clearly safe here with its two range options, 215 and 265 EPA rated MPG. Since you can plug in every night and wake up to a fully charged car, there is no range anxiety for daily use.
