Syria is a strong trading partner with Russia. Pretty sure Putin sees this first as an economic issue, and probably smart enough to realize you can't tame a bunch of zealot Islamists.

Military attack on Syria will undoubtedly produce collateral damage and civilian deaths. The US has no clear idea who is the enemy and who is not. Both or all factions will combine to condemn an attack. Lose-lose and more lose. Whoever said this will be a therapeutic bombing is exactly right.
