The Farmers' Almanac is using words like "piercing cold," ''bitterly cold" and "biting cold" to describe the upcoming winter. And if its predictions are right, the first outdoor Super Bowl in years will be a messy "Storm Bowl."
The 197-year-old publication that hits newsstands Monday predicts a winter storm will hit the Northeast around the time the Super Bowl is played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It also predicts a colder-than-normal winter for two-thirds of the country and heavy snowfall in the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England.
"We're using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It's going to be very cold," said Sandi Duncan, managing editor.
Based on planetary positions, sunspots and lunar cycles, the almanac's secret formula is largely unchanged since founder David Young published the first almanac in 1818.

Some Russsian scientists are predicting this will last for 200 years. My question is how would they know if the period of reduced solar energy will last for only 200 years? Why not 10 or 12 thousand like the major ice ages?
I guess it doesn't much matter the length. If it's cold during your life and your children's life, all you can do is deal with it.
Yup, just like last year and the year before. Oh, and once again, this hurricane season will be the worst we’ve ever seen.
Fine by me. Love the cold.
Could sleep in mid 40 degree outside and be comfortable.
Actually, according to this article it is the >>

I can’t say that The Farmer’s Almanac has a strong statistical association with predictive weather patterns, but NOAA isn’t much better.
OOPS!
The Russians have been running their weather war machine for decades. The “Russian Woodpecker” continued during the worse part of their economic collapse. Meanwhile our “HARP” system seems quiet. The Russians would have a better outlook on weather than our Gore Bull warming cult.
And people thought that when Obama talked about this being the time that the seas receded and the climate change began to reverse, he was just blowing smoke....
Cold in winter?? Who would have thought.
Normally August here in Ga. is HOT so far it’s
hardly broken 90 this week in the low 80s and
60 last night. I love it and hope for a cold
and early winter.
I think the FA is well regarded, though their predictions are of the broad brush variety. They predict forecasts such as hotter-colder-wetter-dryer, etc for 16 regional areas of the USA and they are usually right.
Like the article says, they have used predictive methods such as planetary positions, sunspots and lunar cycles for 200 years. I guess that can work if you know what to look for.
It’s orbital mechanics (of planets) and plasma currents in the sun. The lower the solar currents the lower the solar output. From what I’ve read the sun’s wobble and currents will be very low for the next several decades. This is the first I’ve read of a 200 year duration.
ya may want to look up John Casey “Cold Sun” and read his prediction of the coming solar hibernation.
It's amazing what we learn on Free Republic, isn't it? :)
This thread covers some of Casey’s work at the Space and Science Research Corporation.

I live in GA as well. North of Atlanta. I left the deck door open and woke up pretty darned cold this morning! It was 60 degrees, like you said.
There have been several unusually cold nights, for August, this summer. And generally not very hot in the day either.
