Wired magazine had a recent article about a college professor who graded on a curve. His policy was to give an "A" on the final exam to whichever student got the highest score and then grade the other students in direct relation to what the best student had achieved.

A recent class communicated through facebook (quite openly) and they all (100%) showed up for the final exam and sat in the hallway. No one took the test. Everyone got an "A".

The teacher was honest and consistent (but has probably since altered his policy).
The class was clever and showed good collaboration.
But the overall lesson is that "gaming the system" is the way ahead -- and the problem at Microsoft -- and achieving excellence is just not necessary.

It didn’t work 40 years ago, and won’t work now.

College professors are supposed to be at LEAST “Moderately” intelligent! LOL.

Had a world history professor in college and he was demanding. Liked the challenge so worked to get an “A”. Everything I did was graded as an “A”, quizzes, testes, final; never missed a class, and dominated discussion in class. He gave me a “B”. I asked why? He said he only gave out 2 “A’s” in his career and they both were to Fulbright scholars and I was not a Fulbright scholar. Felt like telling him to take his “B” and shove it up his “A”.

Do you have a link to that? I read WIRED magazine every month and never remember an article about a class that refused to take a final exam - thus all getting awarded an "A".

That doesn't even make sense. If they didn't take the test, how could they get any kind of grade at all?
