Commentary: A Horrifying and Lethal Case of Boredom

Beyond that, it is yet another painful sign of how gun violence has become far too rampant in America and access to firearms has become far too effortless. Anyone with determination — including teenagers — can get a hold of a semi-automatic firearm as easily as buying hand sanitizer in a drug store.

Moreover, there is something so deeply amiss in a world where teenagers shoot and kill passersby simply to deal with their sense of boredom. For many, that was the void once filled by sports, the arts, pastimes and hobbies — even television. This sad incident in Oklahoma should remind the nation of the need for more homes to benefit from the presence of mentors who can provide guidance to a generation of young people for whom such models are painfully absent.

Instead of straining to make this a racial incident and indictment of the civil rights leaders, this event should be looked at squarely as an example of how the nation’s porous and lax gun laws have intersected with a deep-seated cultural void to produce young people with a lack of character and basic human decency.

I grew up watching TV westerns from long ago. I was always amazed that bad guys could be shot once and would always just silently crumble to the ground, dead before their head hit the ground. Remarkable. (Didn’t take long to realize TV wasn’t reality.)

Poor George Zimmerman, he’s a walking American melting pot of different ethnicities, not hostile to any of them (demonstrably helpful to blacks) yet now he’s a target.

Not too sure about the Jewish angle, although black anti-Semitism dates back to the civil rights era. He’s more white than Jewish to the haters.

Actually, the cases are very similar. Trayvon attacked Zimmerman. The difference being that his victim was armed. Otherwise Zimmerman would be dead.

Here is the fundamental difference between George Zimmerman and Christopher Lane: Zimmerman was armed and was able to defend himself against a thug who attacked him. Lane was not armed and, in all likelihood, could not defend himself. The Trayvon Martin case had everything to do with people having the right to self defense and not race. Christopher Lane, on the other hand, seems to suggest that being unable to defend oneself against the evil elements of society can have tragic consequences. Christopher Lane is the “filp side” of George Zimmerman, and Trayvon Martin represents the growing trend of violence that is disproportionately effected by Black teenage males from broken and dysfunctional homes.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that race was not a factor in the Lane killing (even though the shooters advertised hatred of whites in social media). The big hypocrisy that exposes in comparison with the Martin killing is that in the other case, even after an acquittal and with no evidence whatsoever of George Zimmerman being a racist, the President of the United States and the U.S. Justice Department highlighted the case’s racial dimension and ordered a federal “investigation” into Zimmerman’s racial motives. THAT is the outrage, coming not from racists, but from intelligent Americans who know that the DOJ has better things to do. The Lane case reveals how wrong Obama and Holder were in the Martin case, and that has nothing to do with their race, but they need to acknowledge their error, as a simple matter of honesty and keeping the public trust.

I had a 22 rifle at age of 14.

I was never inside, never bored. There was always something to do - make up games, sand-lot football or baseball, forty five minute walk to the river for fishing, swimming or just hanging out. Kids these days are missing some good times.

I also had great parents as did all my friends.
