NSA has zero tolerance for willful violations of the agencys authorities, the NSA said in a statement Friday. Does that mean they were fired?

disciplined is the word they used about those agents. Probably had to clean the john for a week.

Does that mean they were fired? No, it just means the higher-ups are going to act all indignant and "intolerant".

I’m quite certain that if they’d been fired, the NSA would have reported so—but you’re probably quite certain of that too.

No, it means they were tolerated. It's NEWSPEAK as outlined by Orwell. Words just mean what they say they mean and it is often the opposite of what it sounds like.

That is my question... otherwise, what does no tolerance mean?

They will likely get a bad review after the investigation, while they are on paid administrative leave, which will be completed in a few months. This will probably have a negative impact on their raise this year. So there!

No. They were “inappropriately using” the agency’s authority, not *violating* it.

Not exactly fired. “Frowned upon” is more like it.
