An 88-year-old American World War II veteran has been beaten to death by two teenagers in an apparently random attack in the state of Washington.
Police found Delbert Belton suffering from severe head injuries in the parking lot of a pool venue he frequented in the eastern city of Spokane.
Belton, who had survived being shot in a leg during the Battle of Okinawa, was rushed to hospital but died hours later.
Police claim the retired aluminium company worker was just about to enter the Eagles Lodge pool venue and play the game he loved, when two men, believed to be aged 19 and 16, assaulted him.
"It does appear random," Spokane police Lt Mark Griffiths told reporters. "It appears he was assaulted in the parking lot and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault."
Widowed for a few years, Belton reportedly went to the Eagles Lodge at least twice a week, to have a game and meet friends he used to work with at the local Kaiser aluminum factory.
According to his friends, who called him "Shorty", he had never had an altercation outside the lodge before.
"I don't understand how somebody could do this. I really don't," Ted Denison, Belton's best friend for 23 years, told local news channel KXLY.
Belton served in the US Army in the Pacific during WWII. Police are on a manhunt for the two suspects and have released pictures of them taken at the crime scene.
It is the second random killing to shock America in recent days.

It was also on the local network news channels here, and NBC News last night (western addition)....
Sir, you have the post of the day. Precisely what i have been thinking.
HOLDERS PEOPLE!
Rourke’s Drift.
Horsewhip?
I would put a horse attached to each limb and then whip the horses.
Morons. They should be off the street for as long as possible - life, hopefully.
Ropes are cheaper, reusable, and recyclable.
BTW I agree with you entirely, but the State intends for you & I to bare our throats for their feral scum clients.
We need to outlaw both fists and beating people to death.
Plus we, need background checks on hands and a 24hour waiting period to purchase gloves.
1879-80!
The are going to be so many Sons O’ Bama that we’ll have to protect the “Skinheads”.
So that's what SOB means !!
So now you have:
The Crips
The Bloods
The D.C. Blacks
The Black Disciples
The New Black Panthers
The United Blood Nation
The SOB's
Are we allowed to describe the teenagers and how they look like?
It says men this time?
RE: Now somebody tell me why I dont need a automatic rifle with a large magazine with a bunch of THUGS coming at me like this bunch. . . . .
Not sure how that would’ve help the victim in this case. Chris Lane was shot AT THE BACK while he was jogging.
My dad is the same age, a Vet of WW II., He had me late in life. If anyone hurt him, I couldn’t begin to tell you the agony I would inflict on on the perp, other then my parents told me it’s unladylike to use that language, and you kind folks would ban me and Zot me.
I’m so upset over this, my prayers to the poor mans friends and family he deserved better.
Survived foreign war. Couldn't survive the "United States." We all fall down.
I sincerely believe that there is nothing Obama and Holder would like better.
They would love to see their racist attitudes and policies and the resultant black on white violence finally push whites to the breaking point.
They constantly whine that everything is about white racism and hate - in their minds a white backlash against feral black street animals would validate their accusations.
The race pimps tried to escalate the St. Tyrone case to that point but fell short. Yet they did manage to incite blacks enough to further embolden them. These latest killings are the result of the race pimping in the St. Tyrone case by Obama, Holder, Jackson, Sharpton and their kind.
Welcome to the jungle.
This is what LBJ’s “Great Society” looks like.
What a nightmare. It makes me sick.
When we finally see TV face pics , they’ll be their elementary school pictures.
