PARIS - Specially-trained Syrian rebel fighters, alongside US, Israeli and Jordanian forces, have crossed the border into Syria as an unprecedented assault begins against Bashar al-Assads regime, French daily Le Figaro reports Friday.
The newspaper cites military sources saying the operation began last week in the southern Syrian region of Deraa. The sources say that some 300 Syrians, as well as an unspecified number of Israeli, Jordanian and CIA commandos, crossed the border from Jordan into Syria on August 17, before a second group entered the country two days later.
Le Figaro reports report that military camps have been established at the Jordanian border by the US to train select members of the Free Syrian Army. This would allow the US to intervene without actually sending troops on the ground or arming the rebels.
Interviewed by Le Figaro, specialist from the French Institute of Strategic Analysis (IFAS) David Rigoulet-Roze predicts that Washington may now consider the idea of a no-fly zone above Syrias southern areas to allow them to keep training rebels to overturn the current regime. It would also be the reason why the US sent Patriot Missile Batteries and F16 airplanes to Jordan in June.
Le Figaro says the operation may have been a motive for the alleged chemical attack on Wednesday that has reportedly killed 1,300 people near Damascus. Last July, President Bashar al-Assads spokesman publicly declared that the regime wouldnt use chemical weapons in Syria, unless a foreign assault was to take place.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has said that if the allegations of the chemical attack are confirmed it would be a "big event of grave concern (that would) require America's attention," the BBC reports.
Russia on Friday urged both the Syrian government and rebels to cooperate with UN inspectors trying to verify the reports of the chemical weapons attack.
If they start killing children with chem weapons we will start killing children with bombs from 10,000 feet.

The US Congress was not satisfied transferring MANPADs
to al Qaeda, destroying the Egyptian people,
dissing long term American allies, giving al Qaeda SAMs.
Now, al Qaeda is given WMD.
The US Congress is far, far, far below Caligula’s horse.
War Powers Act???? Have Boehner and McConnell decided to totally ignore the law? If so, they deserve impeachment and removal as much as the kenyan!
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi! |
Now, al Qaeda is given WMD.
Something very serious changed hands in Benghazi...
So, “covert” build ups of troops and support for the “opposition” just days prior to the UN Mission looking for Chemical Weapons - then lo and behold, a “massive” chemical attack occurs in the exact area where the “covert” operations are underway ...
This was “unexpected(tm)”.
At least the horse was innocent.
Putin will not allow Assad to fall.
WW3 is a distinct possibility.
If this is true, I don’t get why Israel would want to get rid of Assad, compared to the alternatives.
Has the US Congress given authorization, or even been notified of this action. An unauthorized war may be an impeachable offense. Or maybe the Congress just doesn’t give a damn anymore.
The outcome will determine if it is a “brilliant operation” that He planned and led or something He knew nothing about.
That is what I have wondered from very beginning. Only thing that makes sense of the incredible cover up. If it was just weapons, the regime could easily weasel out of that one,,,,but WMD falling or being put into hands of AQ...no. Remember too, that shortly after Benghazi attack, Panetta put out a little noticed story that they had ‘lost track of Syria chemical weapons’. Hmmm....
Pretty sad commentary when so many Americans start believing Putin more than our own president and intelligence agencies. I am increasingly in that camp these days. Scary.
