Russia Says Syria Chemical Attack Claims May Target Peace Talks

Reports alleging the use of chemical weapons in Syria may be aimed at disrupting the preparation of an international conference on Syria in Geneva, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

The Syrian opposition has accused the government of killing scores of people in a massive nerve gas attack in Damascus on Wednesday, with death toll estimates varying from a hundred to more than a thousand people. The Syrian government promptly denied the reports as baseless.

“It all looks like attempts to use any means to persuade the UN Security Council to take the side of the opponents of the [President Bashar Assad] regime and to derail the preparation of the Geneva conference, led by high-ranking Russian and US experts whose meeting is planned for August 28 in The Hague,” ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

The official reiterated that Moscow considers it important to conduct an objective and professional investigation to confirm the authenticity of the reports.

Russia is ahead of Obama again.

The last "chemical attack" in Syria was a false flag attack by the Muslim Brotherhood supported "rebels", as is this one, designed to prevent an Egyptian-Syrian alliance.

However, Obama's drive to use the US to initiate WWIII is still on track.

The ONLY thing Russia cares about is maintaining their access to Syria’s warm water ports.

In fact, Russia has numerous interests in the ME area, and is likely to gain a number of them.

So you’re saying the rebels faked the attack? Or that they gassed themselves in order to blame it on Assad?

Exactly, either one or both.

True which makes them even more likely to be truthful in this instance....do you really think they want an US/European alliance forming and forcing their will on Syria???????

Seriously, whoever thought up this stupid attack was an idiot.

Do you really think Assad ordered an attack on a city he controls instead of the rebels themselves and a city they control???? Do you really think Assad ordered an attack on women and children so those pictures can be posted around the world to gin up support in the West for him to be overthrown by armies that would take a day to wipe him out when he has begun to win back ground?????? Do you really think Russia would tell Assad to do this??????

Boy, Assad and Russia are so totally lacking in common sense, they are fricking idiots!

Seriously anybody getting on this bandwagon has an agenda and it is not truth.

You almost figured it out....they attacked a city controlled by Assad and we are supposed to be stupid enough to believe that Assad attacked himself to gin up world hatred so he can commit suicide!

The rebels attacked Assad's people.

The problem started with BO’s inaction a year ago.

When we saw them enter the weapons storage area, last year, the ONLY acceptable response was to drop a MOAB on the facility and incinerate the chem/bio weapons.

Let Russia and the U.N. whine, but that was a true solution, with no follow up action or apologies necessary.

as soon as we drop support of Egyptian military Russia will step in the void and the Suez Canal will essentially be under their control.

Is that not what Israel did when they bombed that weapons storage facility that had just been overrun by the rebels about 6 months to a year ago????

Nope!

ya don’t whack chem/bio’s with little bombs.

Need a 15,000 to 30,000 lb. MOAB to incinerate all toxins.

It would hardly be the first time that sort of thing had happened, i.e. don't assume those guys aren't capable of something like that because you and I aren't.

At this point, Russia has more credibility than our own government or media.

As soon as we drop support of Egyptian military Russia will step in the void and the Suez Canal will essentially be under their control.

That is one of several ME interests that Russia stands to gain.

Russia will likely insist on rigid compliance with the existing peace treaty between Egypt and Israel reducing pressure on both and restoring stability and some tourism. The Egyptian military would agree to benefit themselves (as before) and the Egyptian economy. The military could increase internal security (read imprison the Muslim Brotherhood) to protect Christian and Jewish tourists (and also Copts).

Next step, make life miserable for Turkey, arm the Kurds, and wait for the Turks to commit an international crime and an act of war as a NATO member. Then Russia can cut of all NATO supply routes to Afghanistan and Pakistan if NATO doesn't expel Turkey.

I have see a MOAB bomb video. I was just asking if that was not the reason for Israel attacking the site they did last year since the rumor was that was the base where some of those types of weapons were being held and had just been overrun by the rebels. The rumors were the explosions there were huge so who knows what they used.

I am not disagreeing with you on how to get rid of WMD's because I have no clue beyond extreme heat and not my point to begin with.

The rebels supposedly got access to those weapons at least for a short time last year and we are supposed to be gullible enough to believe Assad gassed his own city so the world would get mad enough at him to go kill him.

I am sorry but that is just insane.

If Israel or anybody had used a MOAB on Syria we would have heard the howls of indignation from all of the usual suspects.

“Overkill, Baby-Killers, Act of War, Unwarranted Act of Aggression”
