An old farm girl here...

Don’t gang up on the wolves. Untrained farm dogs will do just as much damage, as will “house dogs” let out to roam.

It is their instinct to chase, and it is the instinct of sheep to run themselves to death. It is nature, ugly and upsetting to our notions, but it is “what it is” - nature.

If we do not respect the instincts of the species, we will be constantly upset about their behaviors. Why do you think there are shepherds and guard dogs that travel with the flock?

Just an archaic notion?

Adopting and truly loving a dog means understanding it’s instincts, respecting these, training these, and directing these into healthy outlets.

If you do not have the time to train, direct, and work with your dog, don’t even think about moving into a rural area, so you won’t have to deal with it’s “energies”!

Pet dogs, let out by ignorant owners, kill far more sheep than wolves.

If you don’t believe me, ask a local sheep farmer, if you can find one!

If you can’t, it is because of family pet dogs running loose, forming packs, where ‘burbia folks encroach on farmland.

Several decades back, I had my eye on some perfect acreage to raise some really good wool sheep.

My Dad, an old farmer, told me not to make the investment. Too many clueless idiots moving out from the ‘burbs bringing their untrained dogs with them, thinking these could now be “born free” to run as they please.

Not because of wolves, but because of so many totally clueless and irresponsible dog owners out there, thinking that because they are in the “country”, they can let their untrained dogs run off-leash, to enjoy the wonderful freedom of the countryside.

It is the origin of the saying - “S-S- S”. And that is a whole lot kinder than setting a leg trap for a marauding dog, which desperate farmers have been know to do, trying to defend their flock.

Lions and bears oh my, usually only kill to eat and avoid humans. Wolves kill for fun.

After a while, one gets bored of doing "sweet little dogs".

I *am* going to paint "Cujo GSD" shortly.

I can probably work the other dog in eventually, too.

[and no, the IG isn't quite done yet...I'm still pondering where to take the background]

Sheep are sweet and hopeless creatures.

They will just stand there quietly and let a farmer slit their throat.

Goats have no such passive compulsions.

Sheep have a tendency to pile up in a fence corner or some other barrier. Of course it is important to have those darling little wolves in Yellowstone so the yuppies can hear they howl at night. Nothing wrong with wolves that a 45-70 cannot cure. Shoot the bastards on sight.

Yes, upthread, someone mentioned that there was a reason that they killed as many of them as possible 100 years ago.

Hey, wolfies! Kill all you want, but eat who you kill.

They all belong in zoos and preserves where they can be controlled and fed with an appropriate number of goats, sheep, chickens, and any other prey that they need, livestock purchased from farms and ranches.

Take THAT, envirowacko greenie wienies.

Yes dogs can be bad, very bad in packs. Wolves aren’t dogs. Wolves are a wild animal and apex predator. Wolves cannot be domesticated. Wolves are extremely dangerous as a norm. Dogs are dangerous as the exception.

If there were more wolves there wouldn’t be any dogs or sheep.

Feed the lefties to the wolves. Two problems solved.

Oh Sal, that is so good! After about 4 tries I gave up on the mini Greyhound because I could not capture a pleasant look from the photos the guy gave me. This dog has a sweet look!

I am going to ask Eaker to post the painting of 2 of his dogs that I just gave him.

Eaker would you please show Salamander your new painting?

“J.C. Siddoway of Terreton says almost all of the sheep died from asphyxiation. About 10 died of bite wounds and one was partially consumed.”

The wolves killed 10. The rest died as a result of panic from the wolf attack. Wonder what kind of protection they had? They need guard dogs around livestock out there and guys with guns who know how to use them.

Idaho Wolves Kill 176 Sheep at once

The Idaho Statesman

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — A southeastern Idaho ranch lost 176 sheep as the animals ran in fear from two wolves that chased through a herd of about 2,400 animals south of Victor.

Sheepherders for the Siddoway Sheep Co. heard the wolves at about 1 a.m. Saturday, but didn't know the extent of the damage until they saw the sheep piled up on each other at daybreak.

Idaho Wildlife Services State Director Todd Grimm says it's the greatest loss by wolves ever recorded in one instance in the state. About nine years ago, wolves killed 105 sheep on one night.

Wolves are ruthless, efficient killing machines...and they do it for sport.

This incident happened not too far from where my in-laws live, about 300 miles from here. Of these 176 dead sheep, one was mostly eaten, 10 were mauled to death, and 165 SHEEP WERE ASPHIXIATED by the wolves. Most died from being jammed together upon each other in their panic.

Idaho has a wolf hunt season now and it has been expanding. In some counties it is year round. In most counties it runs from August of one year through the end of June of the next.

Wyoming and Montana also now have wolf hunts.

IMHO, these animals should be on an open season, no limit hunt list. No license required where the State or County pays a bounty for their hide. They are doing great harm to the commerical livestock industry, they have decimated the deer and elk herds, they take pleasure in running down and killing any domestic dog they see...and they will attack humans..

Try llamas to guard the goats, they won’t face down a wolf but they face down dogs and coyotes on a regular basis with our flock. They will trample them if the coyote or dog is stupid enough to close.

I was hoping you’d post those pix. I’m looking at the lower right-hand shot and the trailing wolf. And I’m glad he isn’t looking at me.

That is really nicely done, Salamander. The face captures a personality, and that is not easy to do, at least not for me.

I would love to see Cujo GSD if you decide to do that, even the that pic really does scare the tar out of me.
