Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced Monday evening that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship, less than 24 hours after a newspaper pointed out that the Canadian-born senator likely maintains dual citizenship.
Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship, Cruz said in a statement. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but Im an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.
SNIP
Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter, Cruz said.

but one does not have to be a US citizen
and certainly not an NBC
“You can cite no significant authority in history who ever agreed with you.”
I cite the constitution.
Washington et al were British subjects to the Queen. There was no America at the time. Did he call himself an American back then? No. If anything it was Virginian and not American. This is significant.
Based on the current political trend of those in power, there will be no elections in America in 2020, let alone in 2016.
Actually, that FAM text was updated today.
7 FAM 1131.6-3 Not Citizens by “Naturalization”
(CT:CON-479; 08-19-2013)
Section 101(a)(23) INA (8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(23)) provides that the term “naturalization” means “the conferring of nationality of a state upon a person after birth, by any means whatsoever.” Persons who acquire U.S. citizenship at birth by birth abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents who meet the applicable statutory transmission requirements are not considered citizens by naturalization.
Boy, there are some smellz on this thread.
Cruz ‘16!
And the children of CITIZENS of the United States that may be born beyond sea
That there is plural Jeffie
Natural Citizens are conferred rights above Naturalized
Citizens.
My nieces may not hold office as President.
That is the way I understand it.
Teds Dad was naturalized, His Mom was a natural citizen and by way of law Ted is a natural citizen.

Ding ding,we have a winner! His father was also a Cuban citizen atht he time of Cruz’s birth.
*****************************************
Cruz is also Cuban because his father was born there.
He should renounce that too.
It’s a loonie talent, my friend, and I’m not sure how much they have to practice before they are able to pick it up!
With his great background in the law Id like Ted Cruz to end up on the Supreme Court..
It doesn’t matter if he “had alliegance” to Cuba - which we have no way of knowing - or not. His father was a Cuban citizen at the time of his birth, and according to Cuban law (with which I am familiar) that made Cruz a Cuban citizen as well. I like Cruz - it’s a shame - but Canadian-Cuban at birth - it’s too much. Next, please.
“I really wish the rule was blah blah blah...”
I wish the rule was anyone from anywhere could be president.
It is the voters who are the problem, not the potential candidates. For the voters, they should be citizens, have credentials to that fact, be over 35 years old, have no felonies, receive most of their annual income from provable non govt. sources, have and IQ above 85, be able to pass an 8th grade reading and math tests and 8th grade American history tests.
This whole where were you born crap would be moot if the voters were somewhat intelligent.
I’ll take Margaret Thacher as president any day and allow any communist to run too. But all I want is some level of qualifications for the voters.
For the hundreth time, his father was not a U.S.citizen.
Nowhere in the Constitution does it say George Washington was not a natural born citizen.
You're citing the Constitution, PLUS your PERSONAL BELIEF of what "natural born citizen" means.
"I believe George Washington wasn't a natural born citizen. The Constitution says no one but a natural born citizen, or a citizen at the time of the ratification of the Constitution, can be President. Therefore, George Washington wasn't a natural born citizen."
Sorry, that doesn't cut it. Not by a long shot.
BarnacleCenturion is correct. The Cuban government would see Cruz as a Cuban citizen, because his father was a Cuban citizen at the time of Cruz’s birth.
It’s like herding cats around here.
You know why we lose?
Because of the old circular firing squad.
Obama escaped the bullet, he is out of the circle.
Here we are locking and reloading.
If they were both American citizens. YOu can’t be a patriot of a country of which you’re not a citizen.
Cruz was a natural citizen by birth.
