And people wonder why it is you might get a little nervous seeing a character like this walking ‘round your neighborhood at night in the rain.

So, were supposed to believe that after putting out a contract on her son, the mother identified the killer which would mean she didnt expect him to reveal the contract. Precisely. People who haven't been fingered, don't pick their accomplices out of a lineup. Not even a stupid perp would do that.
If there was a serious amount of insurance put on the baby, the police would have raised some eyebrows. If there were any at all, I'm guessing it was a small whole-life policy that some people get to ensure coverage later in life. As a baby, my grandparents put on on me. I cashed it out in my mid-20s, when I purchased a much ore substantial policy.

Either way he killed the baby so he should get the max. Why would being a hitman instead of a garden-variety punk make any difference?

I do remember the daughter mentioning that the mother talked about some insurance policy and wondered how much she could get.
Isn’t it Gerber that sends out those insurance pamphlets? So what if the mother took out a policy. I bet a lot of people do or Gerber wouldn’t keep soliciting. That hardly makes the parents complicit in their baby’s murder.
I think it's very possible that someone took the daughter's comment out of context. Don't think a reporter would do that? Or a lawyer?

In his mind, since the mother and child did not give him what he wanted, they were stealing from him.
Most unfortunately, UnwashedPeasant, that's the crux of the matter. That attitude predominates all the way from the street corner narcotics gangs to the office of the attorney general of the United States.
Welcome to post-constitutional America.

It doesn't need to be a "substantial" insurance policy.
Christopher Milke was murdered for a $5000 insurance policy. Roger Scott, one of three convicted in his murder, participated for a promise of $250.
