Iraq seeks help from US amid growing violence

A resurgence of violence and a renewed threat from al-Qaida have recently revived flagging U.S. interest in Iraq, officials said Friday as Baghdad asked for new help to fight extremists less than two years after it forced American troops to withdraw.

Faced with security crises across the Mideast, North Africa and Asia, the White House largely has turned its attention away from Iraq since U.S. forces left in 2011. But the country has been hit with deadly bombings at a rate reminiscent of Iraq’s darkest days, stoking new fears of a civil war. More than 1,000 Iraqis were killed in terror-related attacks in July, the deadliest month since 2008.

The violence has spurred Baghdad to seek new U.S. aid to curb the threat, said Iraqi Foreign Minister Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari. He said a U.S. assistance package could include a limited number of advisers, intelligence analysis and surveillance assets—including lethal drones. …

Iraq “forced” the US to withdraw? Oh no.

So, Iraq throws the U.S. out and now wants it back because the Shi’ites and Sunnis are back to killing each other? This is a win-win situation. The more Muslims killing each other, the better. Let the feral animals act out; America and its allies (if any) have no dog in this fight. It's the same old 1,400 year war between the Muslims.

What they mean in the way of “help,” this ‘assistance package,’ is MONEY! Send us some more money dumbasses. We need to pack our Swiss bank accounts and then go infest England, our new homeland.

...which we should have figured out in 2003, but we are now the big daddy cash chump across the globe, building card houses and calling them fortresses of democracy.

I think we should immortalize Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Fly over both, once. Drop the ‘memorial’ and turn the whole damn countries into glass.

In Zero's defense, it takes a lot of concentration to create new problems in Africa, Asia, and the Mideast, *and* it cuts into his golf game. Probably should have crafted something additional into Obamacare so that the IRS could take care of these problems, maybe the IRS could have been running guns to Mexican druglords as well.

Yeah - they “kicked us out” under Obama and in accordance with his plan to leave anyway.

The USA has invested substantially more in blood and treasure in this Muslim sink hole than it is worth. Trying to convert these 17th century militants into freedom-respecting people was George Bush’s terribly expensive pipe dream. We should become totally oil independent and shake the desert dust off our feet as we leave those hideous places.

We need to bring every man home from Afghanistan, and stay out of Iraq. We need to stop sending weapons to Syria, and we need to reinforce our partnership with Israel.

We only have one friend in the Middle East, let the rest go to hell.

Since they’re all against Israel, then we’ll have to fight them anyway. We pull back to our own shores, they’ll come here no matter what. The liberal dream of “they’ll leave us alone if we leave them alone” does not exist.

The whole Arab Spring debacle has me thinking that leaving Saddam in power might have been better. Democracy and Islam don’t mix, and it was a fools’ errand to try to impose it over there. Saddam was one of the few secular leaders in the area...and while he was a bad guy, that’s par for the course in that part of the world.
