Yep, it is a shame. It’s a shame there are people in this world who don’t understand the value of an animal like that.

Of course that person very likely doesn’t place any value on human life either.

If in the wild and folks are going to eat it, okay. If the thing is tame and a lot of people are very partial to it, why just kill it for the fun of it.

Or, at least not very much value.

When I was in junior high, a lady ranger rescued a young deer whose mother was killed by a car, and was given permission to raise it as a mascot. Two or three years later, she was assigned to a lookout tower for the season, and the deer, now a tame buck, was there with her.

Deer season arrived, and a couple of yahoos I'll refuse to call hunters jumped out of a truck, and shot it. It was climbing the outside stairway of the lookout tower on a leash and wearing an orange "vest". She was just a couple of steps ahead of it, about halfway up to the cupola, screaming at them not to shoot.

Forest Service & local deputy caught them on the way down the mountain after she radioed it in. Reckless endangerment, shooting from a road, shooting at an occupied dwelling, maybe a few other charges tossed at them.
