You’re right. Nine out of ten men I meet who claim to be Vietnam Veterans were never in Vietnam. They search the internet for information and create a story that usually falls apart within two sentences of a conversation.
For some reason, they always claim to have been Airborne, Special Forces, and Recon; no one yet has ever claimed to have been a truck driver, clerk, cook, or anything unglamorous.
However, this guy’s mention of the Ashau Valley and UGS (Unattended Ground Sensors) did ring a familiar bell.
