The cost of weather-related power outages is high and rising as storms grow more severe and the U.S. electric grid gets older, according to an Obama Administration report that calls for increased spending on the nations electric power system.
Power outages cost the economy $18 billion to $33 billion per year, according to the report, a figure that has been rising steadily over the past 20 years. That can rise to $40 billion to $75 billion in years with severe storms such as 2008s Hurricane Ike and last years Superstorm Sandy.

Oh, the electrical grid!
It sure seems odd that that putz is allegedly worried about interruptions of electrical service when he is shutting down coal fired power plants willy-nilly via the EPA.
Lets reduce our social spending oi the same level as China and then we can spend on infrastructure.
And with the savings pay off the debt in 5 years.
They don’t even use the other name anymore.
That’s the idea.
Stress the power grid, disrupt reliability, increase chaos.
Electrical wiring requires us to mine copper and metallic ore for the conductors and petroleum products for the insulation.
Grid? Is that some new slang for malt liquor?
I have an idea, let the power companies do it and pass on the cost to the users over time. If the federal government gets involved, it’ll cost twice as much.
IIRC that should be already in their long term plans. I’m sure that’s what they have been telling customers and Public Service Commisions all over the country. Obama is blowing it out his........
People who write this dog crap forget about he Dust Bowl, Forget about Hurricane Hazel, forget about the storms of history that killed many more than recent storms.
We have had storms throughout history, but they choose to forget them and fall for the horse crap fed to them by the vacationer in Chief.
It sure seems odd that that putz is allegedly worried about interruptions of electrical service when he is shutting down coal fired power plants willy-nilly via the EPA.
That’s what I thought too, either these people are schizophrenic or they truly have no idea what the right hand is doing vs. the Left hand.
Of course the conspiratorialist could always say that they want to upgrade the Electrical Grid so that they can turn off the power to those who don’t tow the ‘line’ easier and send that power to the Urban areas that are more important.
In any case the real solution is stop all of the increase in regulations, allow the ‘market’ to determine what’s more important, Power plants or Power Lines. In either case I have to point out that there is sure to be a ‘conservationist group’ somewhere that opposes it. Case in point, The Sierra Club.
Yet the power utility in my locale was recently denied the rate increase it needed to upgrade its infrastructure. Typical liberal doublespeak.
More rentseeking crony capitalism ... aka fascism.
What conspiracy?
Oh.
Agenda 21.
Removing reliable power from the hinterlands is a good step toward getting people to move to the UN aproved one world government human habitation corridors. (Just the opposite of the REC).
It's also a convenient way to crap on all those bitter clingers in flyover country who oppose this sort of crap.
Recalcitrant individuals can be shut off as well, or entire neighborhoods, towns, counties, etc.
Yabbut—you caught it (at least someone did!).
It goes hand-in-glove with shutting down coal fired plants, a significant portion of electrical generation in this country, and....
making electricity more expensive...
and putting upward pressure on both supplies and prices for natural gas (a major home heating fuel in flyover country).
With the EPA's continued attack on hydraulic fracturing, and continuing Federal (virtual) lockouts from drilling on BLM leases in some states, the net effect will be to increase energy prices, and eventually, force more who are barely getting by now to choose: heat and light or food, or join the rolls of the government dependent.
Even in the 80s, the libs were complaining about the original name for “the slims”, calling it “discriminatory”.
It is interesting to note the article title shows up in the sidebar on my machine as "White House Calls for Increased Grid...", especially in light of this conversation. Perhaps if there had been some honesty permitted versus all the Political Correctness detracting from an open discussion of the disease and its vectors, without the protracted effort to claim everyone was at risk, those risks could have been mitigated, not only for the community which was the main vector, but for others who are more mainstream.
I have little doubt the push for "same sex marriage" and "partner benefits", as well as Obamacare itself (especially universal coverage without risk assessment or denial for previously existing conditions), are aimed at making the rest of us pay for the medical depredations of that behaviour.
That the economy has been manipulated into a virtual depression leaving millions without the insurance benefits they got from employers, (many of which have developed conditions during the time of their employ which might either preclude coverage on their own or render it unobtainable for financial reasons) gains support for Obamacare from those who are straight, but desperate to have their medical costs covered somehow.
At the same time, it reduces the probability that small businesses will hire anyone they don't desperately need to hire because of the costs involved, and has caused reductions in working hours for huge numbers of formerly full time employees as businesses struggle to keep the doors open--causing even more mess.
The whole thing could not be more destructive if that was the intent, and it may well be.
All of these failed/doomed to fail programs are facets of the same evil gem.
