My thinking is that in the ten years they were there surely they could have found a way out. He wasn’t there 24/7 - but then maybe they were so toughly cowed or something.

I'm thinking the same. The women said they would get beaten if they tried to escape. Did you see the pictures recently released of one of the rooms? It was apparently the room where the little girl and her mama was living and there were heavy chains and locks. But it's my understanding they weren't always chained up so who knows.

With this Hannah, I dunno. The article says she wasn't being held against her will but couldn't say if she knew about her mother and brother. Very strange. Where was she during their murders and the house fire? What was her family thinking to send her off to Hollywood with a man? All sorts of red flags.

kept locked/unlocked threatened, beaten, raped and perhaps witnessing other horrendous things would tend to make one a bit hesitant to do anything, like try to escape, unless you knew absolutely for sure you could get away....

E. Smart was at a party with other people within a few weeks of her kidnapping...she wasn't tied up....

lets be careful to surmiss what WE would do in a situation because we haven't been in those shoes....

even our beloved Reagan understood what Patty Hearst went thru....
