I take Russians more seriously. Their subs dive much deeper than ours, have a current version of our Subroc, which is nuclear tipped, and we retired ours. Shkval rocket torpedo is the fastest on the planet. As well as the Russian version of every type of torpedo and cruise missile we have, they also have made much progress in silencing. And all their weapons seem to have a nuclear version, unlike the US Navy which has essentially de-nuked itself except for the Trident strategic weapons.
Ironically, they now have fewer subs than we do, but they are not to be underestimated.
I never make light of Russian capabilities. I just found it amusing that the name of this missile is ‘onyx’.
Onyx, is FR-famous.
“Ironically, they now have fewer subs than we do, but they are not to be underestimated.”
If the Russian and Chinese subs are working together in a conflict with the US, how do the number stack up to us?
I would agree not to underestimate any enemy, but the word is the Chinese sub fleet is inferior, operationally and materially as well as poorly trained.
But they have a boatload of money to throw at stuff, and I would not underestimate the power of gobs of money.
“Shkval rocket torpedo is the fastest on
the planet.”
I wouldn’t get too impressed. Supercavitation torpedoes are unguided weapons last I heard. They are straight runners, like WWII torpedoes
Try to keep up. While the Ruskies are indeed never to be underestimated or taken lightly there is a bunch of stuff that they don’t have. While they CLAIM to have deep diving subs they DO NOT have piping systems that we don’t have. It’s not the hull that limits depth-—it’s the seawater systems. While the SUBROC was a good unit it’s long since been replaced by the HARPOON and its cousins. As to noise, our subs have been quiet holes in the water for over four decades. Russian subs have never been quiet-—we claimed we could hear them coming from a shore-side barstool. Since they had a lot of room to improve I guess it’s easy to make the case that they have? Ivan was never willing to spend money on rubber mounts, flex hoses, and all the small things that go along with them. If you want to have an adventure try to find out where you can buy a rubber flex hose in Russia? Remember our Navy P-3’s? With their sonobuoys they always know where Ivan is.
