Hypothetical situation; you have just been sent to some brutal, Stalinist, dictatorial place where you cant bring your gun. Think Uganda, Somalia or Illinois.
Upon arrival your host properly adheres to good gun owner-guest protocol and offers you your choice of one of his two guns for your bedside piece. Those guns are a Ruger 10/22 in .22 rimfire or a Walther PP in .32 ACP.
Which do you choose?
Now you know what a bedside piece is designed to do and thats keep you and your patch safe against bad guys. It could be inside the home or outside on the property.
The 10/22 is loaded with Stingers and the Walther is loaded with .32 ACP jacketed hollow point rounds. You are assured that both guns are reliable and dependable.
The Guns
The Ruger 10/22 has sold over 5,000,000 guns and has been produced since 1964. Ive had mine for 36 years and it has worked wonderfully in the Nevada desert to the humid South Carolina swamps and in the icy Adirondack Mountains. It has never failed me.
The standard magazine holds 10 rounds. The gun has an easy to use safety. The bolt release is a bit awkward for a quick deployment but you probably wont have the bolt back anyway if you plan on using the gun for defense.....

Stingers?
Won’t the 10/22 chamber .22mag?
I’d go for the Walther .32 because it can go under the pillow.
.32. Bigger is better at the headboard.
A shotgun in 12ga caliber. But okay. I have a Beretta Tomcat in .32 loaded with Glaser Safeties and Hydra-shocks as my personal defense weapon. Unless you shoot someone in the head with a .22 they’ll still be coming at you.
I think I’d rather have the Marlin Model 60. I got real used to that tubular magazine in all the years I owned on and could load one quick as a wink.
Depends on whether you plan on supplimenting your diet with small birds and rodents in the forseable future.
How is the Ruger tricked out?
Walther.
Neither is a particularly good option, but I’d go with the 32. WIthout a decent defensive weapon, your first choice should be to hide, and if they find you, they are going to be close enough that the handgun should be adequate, and a lot easier to get on target. You are also more likely to have it close at hand.

Take the .32 then shove it in his face and take the 10/22 also. Now I’m covered both short and long range.
I would prefer to stay home.
you can get a 20 round magazine for the 10-22
can’t we have both?
For a .22, I personally like the Remington Nylon 66.
Can’t go wrong with a Walther, if it is a European made Walther. Still better than throwing rocks.
I’d give my eye teeth for an European made Walther PPK!
>> Think Uganda, Somalia or Illinois.
That got a chuckle.
Gun Talk Radio PING!
I don’t like long guns for home defense because most encounters are in close quarters. But if I had the 30 round banana clip on my 10/22 I might change my mind. How many rounds does the Walther hold, 8? It wasn’t that long ago a woman holding up in her closet emptied all 5 rounds in her .38 special and the bad guy got away.
8x.32ACP vs 30 Stingers I might go with the rifle.
The .22. The .32 round is practically useless.
>> Wont the 10/22 chamber .22mag?
There was a version that did. Not the standard one you can buy at Wally World though.
“A magnum version, chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge, was made from 1998 to 2007”
