These are designed to give prominence to half a dozen or more candidates so the primary vote will again get split.

Conservatives need to settle on only one candidate going forward into the primaries. That candidate might not even have emerged yet.

What is needed is a pre-primary means of narrowing down to one conservative candidate.

You got that right. With one moderate versus many semi-conservatives, Romney won easily.
