National Right to Life Committee disowns Cleveland chapter for defending marriage

CLEVELAND, August 5, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an unprecedented move on July 17th, the National Right to Life Committee (NRTL) chose to support Senator Rob Portman's newly expressed support of gay marriage and to withdraw support from one of the most effective prolife organizations in the country, Cleveland Right to Life (CRTL).

In a letter dated July 17, 2013, the president of National Right to Life, Carol Tobias, informed CRTL President, Molly Smith, that because of their recent addition of support for traditional marriage and the family to its Mission Statement, AND because of CRTL criticism of Senator Portman, that CRTL would no longer be considered an Affiliate of NRTL. "This letter, which was received well after the date on the letter, came without even a phone call or email from the NRTL organization," noted Molly Smith. "In fact, we have become aware that copies of the letter were forwarded to Ohio prolife organizations from Senator Portman's office before I had the opportunity to read it myself," added Smith. CRTL can only surmise from these facts that there was significant coordination between NRTL and Senator Portman's office on this and that the Senator asked for NRTL to take this action against one of the most active and effective local prolife organizations in the country.

"This entire salvo was the result of CRTL adding the marriage/family issue to its Mission Statement recently because the traditional family with a mother and a father is an inherent right of every child," notes Jerry C. Cirino, CRTL Board member. "We know it is not only important to protect the rights of a child to be born...we should also care about the child after they are born," continued Cirino. "This is about supporting the family in America and any politician, including Portman, who supports the break-up of the American family and supports the denial of a mother and father for children has forfeited the right of support and endorsement of the prolife movement, concluded Cirino.

CRTL has noted that since their recent announcement they have received tremendous grassroots support and new financial contributions for their efforts. "We have had expressions of support from politicians around Ohio, many of whom have shown an interest in running against Republicans who do not steadfastly support the family and traditional marriage," noted Smith. She also encouraged other local, state and national groups to contact them for information about the improved prolife mission statement. Other Right to Life, organizations in Ohio are also considering joining CRTL and Lake County Right to Life in modifying their Mission Statements. CRTL has also noted that the organization has never had a direct affiliation with NRTL, only a tiered relationship that is maintained through the state organization, Ohio Right to Life (ORTL) and as CRTL remains an Affiliate in good standing of Ohio Right to Life the national organization's action is puzzling to say the least. CRTL has not changed its focus and will continue the fight for legal protection for all human life especially for the unborn, the family, the elderly and the infirm.

Cleveland Right to Life is an autonomous organization that cooperates with local, state and national organizations to protect and defend all human life from conception till natural death and to work with other Right to Life affiliates around the state to spread the Gospel of Life.

Should individual chapters take a position with regard to the Equal Rights Amendment? If they do, should they be thrown out? And should notice of them being, thrown out be delivered to all the other chapters first? By homosexual activists?

These are not rhetorical questions.

What rules? You mean like putting something in their mission statement that has nothing to do with the pro-life agenda?

how can there be a revival if people who claim to be part of the solution are criticizing the organizations that are working every day to keep our country from going down fast?

If NRTL is part of the ‘bad guys’, what does that mean? Every intramural spat or misunderstanding is cause for political divorce?

there are 49 state chapters. CT is the state without one.

They had a very small one 30 years ago and it ceased to function and went defunct. Not the same issue, but we are without NRTL here and the vacuum is disabling.

Homosexual “marriage” will strengthen the perversion of embryonic research among our “progressive” society you fool.

How will homosexual “married” couples reproduce as close to a natural conception as possible (Which would is a perverted goal of theirs)? How many embryos do you will be killed to reach their goal of viable conceptions? NRLC sure are made up of short sighted fools that can’t see the end game with that issue.

this is something you should discuss with NRTL and have them change their bylaws.

On the other hand, it is more fun to be a rebel!
How long before 1/3 of cleveland RTL breaks off in a fit of rage to form a splinter group?

Folly ... stoogery ... silly entertainment, but sad. Ain’t nothing we can do about it.

Pro-gay is anti-life. Only those who aren’t strong in their convictions are blind to that fact.

Just hope this organization doesn’t go the way of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. . .should we follow the money? I use to donate and I wasn’t quite sure what exactly they were doing with the money. . . couldn’t see the impact like some of the other pro-life leaning organizations I donate to. I guess I could ask for their financial statement regarding salaries, etc.

Hang in there and make sure they get it right. I can tell you have a passion to make things work. Thanks

Again sorry, insemination(s) not conceptions (My lack of proofreading has rendered me a grammar fool, but my points still need an answer by your support of the NRLC policies).

It seems like NRTL could have chosen something other than “excommunication”, or, depending on one’s viewpoint, a better hill to defend. JMHO

NRTL is not pro-gay.

Anyone who is claiming that they are is lying.
Lying is not a pro-life value.

My post was in response to another that didn’t appear to get the connection between anti-life & pro-homo. I said nothing about NRTL.

Simply more proof of what I’ve asserted since the time they were the pivotal organization behind the passage of ObamaCare.

No other organization had as much influence as did the NRTL in the passage of that bill. No other organization came even close.

I said then that either they were too stupid, or too evil to be supported by any conservatives.

Turns out, they were too evil.

I began posting the following rant from time to time beginning soon after ObamaCare was passed:

National Right to Life?????????????????

BECAUSE OF NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE THIS MONSTROSITY BECAME THE LAW OF THE LAND, AND THEY ARE THE MOST RESPONSIBLE.

IF YOU DON’T WANT TO WADE THROUGH THE WHOLE THING JUST READ THE LAST PARAGRAPH:

Evil, or just Stupid?

October/November 2009 and ObamaCare was stalled in the House, the main sticking point being government funded abortions. There were enough Dems opposed to abortion that refused to vote for the ObamaCare if it contained any abortion language that it would not pass.

Representative Stupak (D) MI introduced his amendment that prohibited any government money from ObamaCare bill being used to fund abortions. This essentially would end all abortions, as no medical procedures outside the ObamaCare System can be done. No going to a doctor and paying him directly for anything. Thus, with his amendment, ALL abortions would be illegal.

This amendment to the House bill, if it passed, would give the above ‘Pro-Life’ Democrats a green light to vote for the ObamaCare bill.

Not enough Democrats supported the Stupak Amendment for it to pass. Many Democrats were vociferously opposed to it. It could only pass with Republican votes.

National Right to Life favored the Stupak Amendment, and insisted that Republicans vote for it. Further, they threatened any Republican who didn’t vote for it with their active opposition to that Republican during the 2010 fall election.

The Republicans caved, even those who could see the eventual outcome, right down to the last man. One hundred percent voted for the Stupak Amendment, along with a bunch of Dems who were opposed to abortions. Stupak handily passed.

Nobody believed the Amendment would stick; eventually it would/will be overridden in some fashion and Government funded abortion would become part of ObamaCare. Abortion is the Prime Sacrament of the Left, and will not be denied government funding, let alone be made illegal.

With a green light, the ’Pro-Life’ Dems could vote for ObamaCare, and although many hard-line Leftists were angry, enough of them also could see the end game, and agreed to vote pass ObamaCare.

A couple days later ObamaCare passed the House.

Everyone knew how this would play out, and it did. Rush spoke about it on his show.

I am of the opinion even National Right to Life knew it would play out this way. I’m not aware of anyone who thought otherwise. That leaves us with two opinions of their leadership;

The NRTL is Stupid Strategy;

1. They are so locked into their ‘stop abortion at all costs’ viewpoint that they can’t operate with a strategy that goes beyond 24 hours. Liberals like to say that ‘conservatives are stupid and easily lead’, this situation is circumstantial proof that Leftists are right from time to time. This is the NRTL Stupid Strategy.
OR

The NRTL is Evil Strategy;

2. They were in cahoots with the Pro-Abort crowd on this, and were complicit in getting ObamaCare passed in the House, ObamaCare which will include a monthly premium from all of us to fund abortions. This would be the NRTL Evil Strategy.

Either way, too stupid, or just evil, they are unfit to lead the movement to reduce or end abortions. Their thuggish actions have brought us to the brink of the enslavement of 300 million Americans, ending of the most advanced medical care in the entire history of the world, and will lead, ironically, to Chinese style government mandated and government funded abortions.

I am unaware of any other organization which has played such a pivotal role against Americans and babies in the ObamaCare fight as National Right to Life has.

http://www.prolifecouncilct.org is the Connecticut chapter.
All their state chapters are listed on their page at https://www.nrlc.org/states/index.html .

I get a bit nervous when an organization with a focused mission that I feel strongly about starts expanding into other areas, regardless of overlap or my view on those issues.

I could understand that POV.

The NRTL could have ignored what the Cleveland chapter did or said that mission statements of local chapters don't necessary reflection the views of the NRTL. But, when the NRTL committee kicks out a chapter for opposing same-sex marriage, the only conclusion that can be drawn is the NRTL is in favor of same-sex marriage.
