HBOs Bill Maher thinks the Department of Homeland Security has outlived its usefulness.
On Fridays episode of Real Time, Maher and his guests debated the DHSs usefulness during a discussion of the debate between Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul and New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie.
There was a huge verbal slap by the Republican Party this week between Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, and Rand Paul, Maher said. And it was sort of I think a fight for the soul of the Republican Party where theyre going to go because, OK, next month is the 12th anniversary of 9/11. Some people in the Republican Party are saying lets move on. Thats Rand Paul. He is saying, you know, we spy on each other too much. We spend too much on defense. So Chris Christie is from the neocon-wing, fired back and said come to New Jersey and tell that to the widows and orphans. He played that Giuliani card, which I think is sleazy. And then Rand Paul made a fat joke. But whos going to win this battle is my question to this panel in the Republican Party?
Later in that segment, Maher suggested just eliminating the Department of Homeland Security.
Do you think we could get rid of the Department of Homeland Security? Maher said. This is one of those monstrosities that came out of 9/11. It has, I think, 240,000 regular employees. Janet Napolitano quit at the top. The top 15 jobs there are vacant because no one wants to work there. Its thankless because some shit is going to happen and its mostly luck whether or not youre there when it happens. You cant stop everything. No one wants the job. Why dont we just get rid of it?

Why does anyone care what this foul-mouthed pipsqueak has to say?
I’ve thought for years we should do away with DHS......but having Bill Maher agree with me gives me cause for re-evaluation!!!!!
I know I don’t
Get rid of it, and it won’t need a new name.
In that, it is one up on Bill Maher, who never had any usefulness.
New World Coming: American Security in the 21st Century
There will be a blurring of boundaries: between homeland defense and foreign policy; between sovereign states and a plethora of protectorates and autonomous zones; between the pull of national loyalties on individual citizens and the pull of loyalties both more local and more global in nature.
The "real action" of local, national and global politics is NOT given visibility by the press.
Oh, Maher is a goon.
Maher is a nutcase but I would second the motion to be rid of the DHS.
Homeland Security never had a season.
It was stupid and redundant from its inception.
It attempts to duplicate the exact functions of the Coast Guard with poorly trained drudges and outside contractors. People uneducated about the military were unaware that during WWII and the Korean War the Coastguard was also posted at airports (such as they were in the forties and fifties. )
My respect for Bush fell to the floor when he unleashed the DHS monster upon America.
It hasn’t been used to secure the borders;our “betters”have brought hundreds of thousands more islamic terrorists into the U.S. I define every islamic as a terrorist because such acts are supported by their membership even if they personally don’t carry out the attacks.Tens of millions of other illegals flood this country since DHS.
But Americans, especially whites, can expect intrusive searches and being treated as suspect.
End the DHS.
End the militarization of civilian police agaencies.
Drastically (by say,95%) reduce roadblocks, checkpoints, and SWAT raids. There are a few situations these things are warranted.
So true. The 11th commandment says “Thou shalt not smite down a govt agency”. :-)
