J. Edgar Hoover rejected additional powers which FDR wanted him to take during World War II saying America does not need a Gestapo.

He was the rare type of truly devoted public servant which comes around once in a generation.

Hoover didn't discriminate among white men or black men. He wanted good men. He wanted men who were good for his agency and his country.

I attended a class by W. Cleon Skousen once when I was young. Skousen, who authored the epic book The Naked Communist had spent a good part of his career working for Hoover. He had nothing but respect for him.

J.Edgar Hoover was not fond of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and never trusted his motives, another reason the left loathed him. But he resolved to bust the Klan after those church bombings which killed the little black girls in the 1960s.

It was Hoover who sent FBI agents to infiltrate and bust the KKK once and for all. His program was so successful that the FBI continued it long after Hoover's death. His successors were glad to take credit for the results.

Sometime in the late 1980s the program finally ended because it was discovered that the only thing keeping the KKK going were the dues from the FBI infiltrators.

I think Clint got in right in his movie and there were plenty of witnesses and photos of his almost spousal relationship with his male assistant.

He did a lot of spying on whoever the higher ups wanted him to spy on in my opinion.

Hoover was a big anti-communist and the Left has been paying him back with the gay story.

Back in the mid 1950’s there was a “Joe McCarthy is gay” story being bandied about.

Frankly, I don't care one way or the other whether Hoover was a closet homo or not. I do care about illegal wiretapping and other infringements of the 4th amendment that took place under his watch. If Hoover had his way, we'd be living under a police state.

All too often, people who critcize government infringements of civil liberties when the opponent party is in power are strangely silent when their own party commits the same abuses. So you have people who defend Hoover's wiretapping and Nixon's use of IRS audits to go after his political enemies who then turn around and attack Obama and other Democrats who do the same. And of course, the same liberals who screamed bloody murder at what Nixon and Hoover were doing are strangely quiet when their boy Obama does exactly the same thing.

It was RFK who had Hoover wiretape MLK for JFK.

And Jack “Dragnet” Webb had the LAPD wiretap or bug Julie London’s residence while they were going through their divorce.
