A gun-rights group in the bellwether presidential primary state of New Hampshire has warned New Jersey Governor Chris Christie that signing gun control bills passed by his state's Legislature could have consequences if he runs for president in 2016. The Pro-Gun New Hampshire coalition urged its members this week to call and email Christie to ask him to veto the proposed laws, posing a political dilemma for Christie as he seeks re-election in November in the Democratic-leaning state while also eyeing the national stage.
Christie has a September deadline to sign a number of firearm-related bills seen by their supporters as necessary for tackling gun violence, and the gun rights group is targeting four of those measures.
One bill would ban .50 caliber rifles, another would require police to report lost and stolen firearms to a federal database, a third would create a system for instant background checks during gun purchases and a fourth bill would ban gun sales to anyone on a watch list of militants.
"This is an acid test," said Sam Cohen, executive vice president of Pro-Gun New Hampshire, which describes itself as the state's largest gun rights group.
"If he decides to support these horrible bills, then we in New Hampshire are going to do everything we can to tell our voters not to vote for him in the New Hampshire primary," Cohen said.
Christie, a rising star in the Republican Party who rejected appeals from fellow Republicans to run for president in 2012, said in a television interview in January that he would be "more ready" to campaign for the White House in 2016 after finishing his work as the governor of New Jersey.

I can't possibly imagine how this could be abused politically. /sarcasm
He won’t win anyway.
Especially now that he has lost his loudest cheerleader, Ann Coulter.
The whale just got harpooned.
A little Saturday morning good news.
“””Christie, a rising star in the Republican Party......””””
Looks like a typo. I’m sure they mean to say he was a rising star in the DEMOCRAT party Christie/hildabeast 2016
Krispy Kreme stock takes a hit.
I'd say his becoming a supergiant is more indicative of the dying star phase. I never did like that guy.
Christie will change party’s before the election. He’ll run as a full blown democrat rather than a democrat lite.
I am not sure I could vote for him regardless.
I honestly despise the POS.
On the one hand, I hope fatso signs it and sinks his chances (I’m not from NJ). But on the other hand, it might be better if Christie crowds out money and support for other GOP-e candidates. We need one conservative to rally around this time. I hope GOP-e will be divided.
It’s pathetic that we’ve reached a point where a slug like christie could even be being considered as the pubbie standard-bearer. Sad times indeed.
The control freaks have been busy in NJ. If he signs those GC bills, he’ll just switch parties and run as a ‘rat.
Whaaaaaat? Chris Chrisco is a lying, steaming bucket of pig guts - seething with ambition - hates conservatives - has serviced the Kenyan and trashed conservative principles too often to count. Moreover, given the pendulous blubberosities hanging off of his face these days, his gastroplasty seems to have popped. Hit the reject button.
Wait a minute - what Federal database would that be????
Christie will change partys before the election. Hell run as a full blown democrat rather than a democrat lite.
That wouldn't surprise me at all, nor would it surprise me to see him become one of the Democratic [sic] party's luminaries, especially if Mrs. Snopes Clinton turns out not to be presidential candidate material, after all.
Christie is definitely a go-getter, and I have a hunch a large part of his charm is his very lack of principles. I think he's Weiner with more sense and larger suits.
Let’s hope McCain joins him and changes parties also.
TRUE THAT
