TGI Fridays in NJ fined $500K for switching booze

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - An operator of TGI Fridays restaurants in New Jersey has agreed to pay a $500,000 fine for serving customers cheap booze when they paid for top shelf.

**SNIP**

The franchisee also faces a lawsuit in state court by two women who claim Briad had instituted a uniform policy to substitute cut-rate liquor for premium brands for over at least a year, in violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act. It seeks reimbursement for all customer losses and punitive damages of three times the price of each drink.

Twenty-nine establishments, including 13 TGI Fridays, had been accused of cheating customers following state raids in May. The attorney general's office said the state decided to pursue charges against only eight of the TGI Fridays. The other cases remain under investigation.

At one of the 29 businesses, a mixture that included rubbing alcohol and caramel coloring was sold as scotch. In another, premium liquor bottles were refilled with water that was not even clean. The state never identified which restaurants or bars those were.

Commiecare™ covers that.

Probably as Johnny Walker Red so no one would notice.

I cannot believe that. Rubbing alcohol has been poisoned so that you cannot drink it, It would have probably killed someone.

Although Scotch tastes a lot like rubbing alcohol and Caramel I don’t think anyone is stupid enough to try selling it as Scotch.

The thing here is that they make about 5 times the cost of alcohol when they sell it by the drink, and the greedy bastids aren’t happy with that.

Get caught in Maryland putting any alcohol including the same brand in a bottle and you will be fined heavily.

rubbing alcohol and caramel coloring

Wouldn't that be poisonous?

If we want to set an example of behavior ethics, he’d be put out of the bar business. No second chances.

Zero tolerance to deception and corruption by politicians and others is the only thing that gets their attention. Guarantee there would be no more bars trying to profit selling rubbing alcohol and food coloring as top shelf scotch with that at risk. Same with crooked pols. Throw them out.

The lack of ethics and moral behavior in the USA is reaching critical mass where too many are jumping on the “I want to make it anyway I can”, and not doing what is right because they don’t want to be the only sap in town.

Brings me back to a case study in business school. While 80% of beer drinkers expressed a preference for a specific beer, when blind tested, only 6% could actually identify their preferred beer by taste. I find it fascinating that this criminal could have gotten-away with switching booze for so long.

If they did that with the booze, I hate to think what they are doing with the food.

You ask if rubbing alcohol would be poisonous.

Of course! But you wouldn’t expect a dimwitted MSM reporter to know that — or wonder about it.

They don’t teach fact checking in journalism school anymore — just total acceptance of whatever the grievance industry says.

Not that I drink much but sometimes with Mexican food I order a margarita. At times I swear they either add a few drops of Tequila or exclude it completely. More home cooked meals for the future and I hate getting ripped off these days paying more for less. Govt and corporate greed shucks under Oblahmanism.

Hold on now, that is attempted murder. Surely that action was not dismissed with just a fine! Someone needs to do serious time for poisoning their patrons.

The rubbing alcohol concoction given to regular patrons was an honest mistake. They kept that on hand as the top shelf brand in case Kitty Dukakis ever dropped in.

Order wine by the glass and they bring out maybe 3 Oz. of it with a lot of empty glass ‘so you can swirl it’ as one patron told me. Heck can buy a whole bottle of decent tasting wine for what they charge by the ‘half empty’ glass.

Should eat at our local Mexican Joint. We’re regulars and tip well.

When we order a pitcher of beer they bring it full and all the mugs 1/2 full.

Margaritas? Top self with an extra 1/2 shot at regular price.

First question I ask when going to a new restaurant: what is your corkage charge. If it is reasonable, $20 or less, I make the reservation. If not, I look elsewhere. If in a state that “prohibits that”, I buy a bottle and take home the residue. BTW, NEVER have a bottle delivered to your table opened, especially if it is not an inexpensive bottle.

If just drinking at the bar, order the well drinks or house wine.

Just my 2 cents.

Kitty was my first thought, too...

FWIW, rubbing and wood alcohols are metabolized into oxalic acid. Same thing with ethylene glycol.

It's what destroys the kidneys.

“Rubbing alcohol has been poisoned so that you cannot drink it, It would have probably killed someone.”

As an ex-bartender during my college days, the reporter is clueless and got it wrong. It’s another type obviously, of alcohol. And from my experience, it’s not caramel coloring but maple I believe. We had a cheap owner back who would lessen the booze by diluting it with water and added an 80 proof concoction he made somewhere to give it a kick.

Grain alcohol of about 180 proof can be purchased at many liquor stores. It can be watered down and colored I suppose.

back when I was a kid 50 years ago we used to water it down with Orange Juice in an old gallon pickle jar and pass it around.
