Apparently Rand Paul acolytes equate conservativism with libertinism. The two are not the same.
“Apparently Rand Paul acolytes equate conservativism with libertinism. The two are not the same.”
Apparently some “conservatives” conflate “liberty” with “authoritarian big government”.
It’s a shame.
Libertarians want to return to roughly 1870 A.D. type laws, which is about as “conservative” as it gets.
You seem to be using a one-dimensional model of political ideologies. A left-right spectrum does not even begin to represent reality. There are a great many two (and three) dimensional models on-line (you can look them up). While some are wrong, most are a much better than the one-dimensional spectrum. For instance, libertarianism extends from conservative to socialist, on the economic policy axis. IOW, there are conservative libertarians (or libertarian conservatives, if you prefer).
Reagan’s view on libertarians:

Very true, they are not the same. But in many ways they are allied schools of thought.
JL: I dont think its a very good idea to make fun of people that are your only chance to build a winning coalition against the left.
Bingo. You don't often see union members mocking environmentalists. Liberals pull together when it matters. Conservatives, not so much. Unless another Reagan appears, I'd don't think there will be another Republican president.
Um, Rand Paul is no libertine.
Apparently some feckless morons equate libratrianism with libertinism...
The two are not the same...
YOu are playing with words here, I expected better of you. libertarians are not libertines. Stop playing games.

I will tell you that after years of trying to make Republican conservatism work I am really looking forward to connecting with libertarianism. It works for me and I am happy to extend a hand across the aisle to people on the other side who are just as tired of this military adventuring and loss of freedoms at home.
Frankly if the Republicans have lost me, Chickensoup, they are in trouble, for I am so average in so many ways. I was their base.
