Ohio cancels property tax rollback

After a tradition of some 40 years of subsidizing local taxes, Gov. John Kasich and Republicans in the Ohio House and Senate applied the brakes.

Local governments and schools heading for the ballot in November to ask voters to support new or replacement levies will have to tell them that the price tags attached will be higher than they were previously told.

The taxpayer will pay the entire tab for any new taxes approved.

Under the rollback program, the state pays the first 10 percent of the tax bill for all property owners plus 2.5 percent for owner-occupied homes. The state will continue to pay the tab on existing levies and their renewals but will no longer subsidize new levies.

No. Keep the cost of education OUT of the property taxes; only those with kids need to pay for their education (or home-school)

There should only be MIN. cost to owning property; water/sewer (if not well/septic), police/fire (voluntary, I know I grew up w/ a vol. fire dept.), power, trash, others??.

Apt. owners have theirs rolled into the cost of their rent; condos would be like individual homes?

I’d rack it up there w/ ‘gas taxes’. Supposed to pay for the cost of roads/bridges/etc. but get siphoned off to XYZ; make the Law pertain to what it is being collected for, and any mis-use a felony.
