Full title: "America's Dumbest Banks: Bank Repos Wrong House, Destroys Contents, Then Refuses To Pay Owner's Losses"
Katie Barnett, a 36 year old nurse from McArthur, Ohio, made the mistake of taking her family on a two week trip last month, never realizing when they left home that they would return to find the family residence ransacked, emptied and, for good measure, the locks to the doors changed.
A burglary? Or maybe, as the local police theorized, the work of squatters who had taken advantage of the open domicile to have a two-week vacation of their own?
It turns out, the home invasion was far more insidious than either the Barnett family or the local crime sleuths could imagine.
You see, the Barnett family had fallen victim to one of the most dangerous, dreaded and ethically challenged genres of home invaders in the nationbankerus moronicus piggius.

The Money Quote:
He told me that I would probably need receipts for everything that they took and they were not paying retail, she said. I told him I wasnt running a yard sale and asking them to make me an offer. I told him I dont keep receipts around for everything I have just in case a bank comes by and steals my stuff. And if I did, where do you think it would be? With the stuff that you threw away.
BTW she has hired a lawyer now. Good for her I say!
I wonder what she will name her new bank? If this happened to me no bank could afford the trauma I suffered.
If it were me I would name it the "First National Bank of Tony Thorne USED to work here but now I own it!"
One day an idiot bank is going to try foreclose on the wrong house (again) and the homeowner is going to defend his house...
She should told him everything was gold plated and diamond studded if she let him off easy.
I heard Glenn Beck talking about this the other day. The bank released a statement saying it was ‘negotiating’ with the homeowner, gave her attitude and then according to Glenn was smearing her in the press.
I hope she hires a battalion of lawyers and destroys that bank.
Things would get interesting really quick.
Hire a lawyer? This is theft! Arrest them!
If the unit wasn’t faulty, then the coordinates were. Interestingly, the GPS coordinates were probably supplied by the US Census (an invasion of privacy I regard as probably unconstitutional; the Federal government has no business knowing where I am). Yes, I know they should have checked the address, but did the taxpayer know that we were picking up the liability for census data entry errors?
Well in Ohio it would be fairly cut and dried.
We have "Castle Doctrine" which states someone enters your property unbidden you can keep shooting till they stop twitching then call the Cops so they can bring the toe tag and body bag.
The Chief of Police in McArthur "Closed the Case" once he found out that the bank was responsible. And the Chief of Police in Wellston claims no jurisdiction.
Vinton County Prosecutor Considers Charges After Home Was Wrongly Repossessed
Foreclosure entries into property generally require some police presence. If I were that homeowner, I’d start with the Sheriff and then see about state police. There’d be a lot of satisfaction in seeing the bankers cuffed.
Absolutely. Press grand theft charges against every employee involved, drop charges for no less than $10M. They say “negotiate”, you walk out.
Yeah that was ten days ago and still nothing about it locally.
Knowing the local situation which is the very definition of cronyism and corruption, nothing will happen.
Man I hope that bank is stupid enough to take this to a jury, she’ll end up owning the bank!
I hope they have some women on the bank board, cause this woman is gonna have someone by the b***s. She’s not running a yardsale. LOL Wellston better quit while ahead.
Now imagine the bank-employees getting upset and calling the police, alleging that your home is their property.
There's a lot of ways that could go down.
You type in the address and the GPS takes you close. My Tom Tom gets me usually within four or five houses.
