Energy: A Saudi prince has warned that his oil-reliant nation is under threat because of fracking technology being developed in the U.S. and spreading around the world. OPEC is now caught between Riyadh and a hard place.
Indicative of the panic rippling through the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries over the U.S.-led fracking boom, billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says his Gulf Arab kingdom needs to reduce its reliance on crude oil and diversify its revenues, lest the era of gold-plated toilets come to an end.
In an open letter to his country's oil minister Ali al-Naimi and other government heads, published on Sunday via his Twitter account, Prince Alwaleed said demand for oil from OPEC member states was "in continuous decline" as a result of the technology that has unleashed vast deposits of oil and natural gas worldwide.
In a report earlier this month, OPEC forecast demand for its oil in 2014 would average 29.61 million barrels per day (bpd), down 250,000 bpd from 2013. It cited rising non-OPEC supply, especially from the U.S.

I think the Environazis are freaked out too.
Private industry blindsided them, and they are freaked out.

For those who want to see a 6 minute video showing how horizontal drilling and fracking is done, Northern Gas and Oil has done a great one.
This includes a piece on how groundwater contamination is avoided:

There's a tendency for us to find this humorous. I think there's another side to it though. While we do get perterbed with the Saudis, the truth is that nation could be much worse.
It's people are by and large a large body of whacked out Islamic adherents, whose real feelings against the U. S. are largely tamed by their government. I know many of you can give good examples where that didn't happen. I'm not going to deny that. Unfortunately, in life, bad things can and do get worse. The Shah of Iran wasn't perfect. A lot of folks wanted him gone. Mubarak was far from perfect. Now look at things. Even the somewhat mellowed out Khadaffy was replaced by a network that may yet wind up making the Middle-East much worse than it has been over the last thirty years.
We shouldn't take much glee from anything that might upset the balance of power in Saudi Arabia. If it were to go, Jordan and other friendly nations with the West might follow.

The real freak out for them, is that the world is not about to run out of oil. They’ve counted on that card since the early 70s.
I find this hilarious.
I was at CityWalk Universal a couple of weeks ago, and one person was talking about how oil was running out around the world. I didn’t want to be the guy who explained that wasn’t true. So I sat there and listened. ;^)

They've been doing it for a long time. There's no profit in the tree-hugging business, how else could the tree-hugging/anti-nuke/anti-frack lobby attain such disproportionate influence?
