John Boehner Has Already Killed The 'Grand Bargain' More Than 5 Hours Before Obama's Speech
Business Insider ^ | 07/30/2013 | Brett LoGiurato

House Speaker John Boehner has already thrown a wrench into President Barack Obama's latest "grand bargain" offer — just a few hours after details of it began trickling out, and just five hours before Obama is set to deliver a speech detailing the plan in Tennessee. The gist of Obama's grand bargain is a plan to cut the corporate tax rate, while using billions of dollars in revenue generated in business tax overhaul to fund a job-creation program.

In a statement, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel shot down the idea, marveling that it left small businesses "and American families behind."

"The President has always supported corporate tax reform. Republicans want to help families and small businesses, too," Steel said. "This proposal allows President Obama to support President Obama's position on taxes and President Obama's position on spending, while leaving small businesses and American families behind."

A House GOP leadership aide explained that Republicans have advocated corporate tax reform being paried with individual tax reform. Cutting the corporate tax rate to 25% while leaving the top individual rate at 39.6%, the aide said, would have a "devastating" effect on small businesses.

On an earlier thread today I made the statement that the Republican Party (Boehner) was all blow and no show.

The same statement applies to this article.

The Republicans will “huff and puff” and then tuck their tails in and run away for the biggest crony capitalist party is the Republicans...bar-none.

Not sure where you live but in Texas, those roads and bridges are being built...by illegals. You can look at any road project and all you see are illegals - once in awhile, you see an American(black, white, hispanic, and yes, you can tell the difference) on a backhoe or other large piece of equipment, but mostly you see illegals.

Right. And where did the money go?

Even w/out OCare, jobs will NOT be coming back to the U.S., which has the highest corporate tax rate in the world.

Might as well ask to restore the Republic to its Constitutional basis; that, sure as sh!t, would do it....better, faster, stronger.

Can we use slave labor? Eventually the unemployed and welfare people will outnumber the employed and well to do. They will vote to take their stuff...what then?

“Pick an issue popular with 75% of the people and champion it.”..........

That would be to defund and eliminate Odumbocare completely.

How about get rid of all income tax rates period, both individual and business?

If you think the IRS is intrusive now, just wait until they are chasing every self-employed "consultant" for sales taxes, every barter transaction, every gift... If you think the drug war is bad, if you think property seizures for collections are bad now, just wait until there is a "FARE Tax" because the size of the black market will be so huge that the IRS will take total control of cash, seize assets in lieu of payment, and watch every transaction to get its cut. That includes chipping people to buy or sell.

Spending is the problem. Tax policy pales by comparison.

Boehner did not kill Obama’s grand bargain.

It was NO “grand bargain” and as a proposal there was nothing to kill, it was DOA = dead on arrival - before anyone said anything.

I do not understand the postings put up here sometimes.

An article describing Boehner saying the right thing is put up, he's not playing at all with the administration on corporate taxes, and half the posts actually suggest he's doing something bad.

Have we become so crazy in our outrage that we can't even read?

There are a lot of bridges and roads that need to be built...

They've already spent those several trillion nickels.

Nope, we're all just showing that the conservative part of America is just as stupid as the rest of the GOP. We get angry at nothing just like we used to complain about DUers

I don't particularly trust Boehner, but the idea that he ALWAYS goes along is just stupid. When he does something right, I'm not going to piss and moan and act outraged, and neither should anyone here. It's a bad sign.

I don't understand this comment. A rate cut is a rate cut. It's still more money in pockets.

You’re part of the fraction of 1% that believes the income tax is better.

Actually, in principle I prefer consumption taxes, but that preference dissolves when the rate carries serious unintended consequences. You see, in addition to my 12% State income tax, and the 1/5% property tax I pay, I already pay a 9% sales tax, to which you propose to add another 30% (Fare taxers lie about the rate).

There is already a black market in cigarettes and alcohol because of a lower rate than the Fare Tax would assess, but instead of answering the argument with content you chose to portray my position falsely.

If the income tax went back to 1% (which was the original rate) would you really be bitching about it now?

The problem is spending.

The nation is ready for Reaganomics again. A liberal businessman I know suggested welfare reform without any prompting from me.

It’s time.
