Fast food workers strike: ‘I can’t afford my shoes or rent’
[p]MSNBC ^ | July 29, 2013 | Ned Resnikoff

“We’re building a movement of fast food workers in a way that has never really existed in the fast food industry,” said Jonathan Westin, an organizer for New York Communities for Change, who noted that this week is the first time the strikes have been coordinated across cities.
.
.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus launched a campaign called “Raise Up America” which has taken efforts to associate itself with the fast food workers. Several members of the caucus, including its co-chair, Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, were present at Monday’s actions in New York.
.
.
Similarly, Brooklyn-based McDonald’s employee Kareem Starks said he has little to lose by going out on strike.

“I don’t make much,” Starks said. “I get treated like crap. At he end of the day, should I stand up or take this? Should I stand up or live like this? … I can’t afford my shoes or afford my rent. Is that how you’re supposed to be living?”

Wow! Those are nice signs they had professionally made up. Bi-lingual, even! Probably funded by the same commie front groups that are involved in all the other leftist protest movements.

I don't believe McD's was holding a gun to the heads of these employees when they signed their employment application(s) for a known hourly wage.

This is not a career job morons. Want more pay ? Get an education and make yourself worth more. I hope all these striking idiots are IMMEDIATELY replaced by unemployed people who want to work. Screw these imbeciles

Careful I went down that path on an earlier thread and people thought I was evil for expecting a man to be able to provide.

You must leave those shoes in the closet for the first 2 1/2 months.

Every day for the past 5 years or so the same paid protesters march outside of a highrise during lunch about a block from my office chanting “What do we want? Higher wages! When do we want them? NOW!”
If they spent that time getting an education.. oh never mind.
They would rather walk in a circle and chant.
I’ve even seen the organizers hire (give cash) to some of the known local bums that need booze money or whatever.

Striking - that’ll solve the problem. Instead of low pay, they’ll get NO pay. They can all go hungry for all I care.

I snapped this last September here in Hobbs, NM.

Similarly, down in Monahans, TX, the McDonald's sign out front right now says they are hiring off the street with no experience... $14.00/hr.

Any unskilled labor can hire on right out of HS, probably without even had completed HS... at $19.00/hr... in the oil fields. Brutal work, but the labor market is tight out here, just like you said.

If you don't have a job out here, it's because there is definitely something wrong with you.

Boy are they in for a rude awakening when they discover that nobody will pay $10 for a fast-food burger to support their $15/hr wage!

Fast food jobs are for teenagers, not those living on their own.

Some convicted felons may only be able to get jobs like burger flipper.

Amazing on so many levels.

A fast food store today is a vending machine with humans as an increasingly expensive component that the technology folks seek to upgrade to reliable, non-biological parts.

I am a man! (and your point is...?)

If you don't have a job here you're severely disabled, very old, lazier than $#!+ or crazier than a bedbug.

Fast “food” “workers” — losers. These parasites do not realize that their situation is due to the culmination choices they have made during their pathetic lives.

Anybody can work in commission sales with the exception of some few licensed or bonded positions.
